WAITOHI FLAT LIBRARY.
The annual meeting in connection with the above was held in the Waitohi Flat schoolroom on April 23rd. There was a good attendance. Mr T. Talbot was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The chairman then read the report and balance-sheet, which were as follows: " Your committee beg to report that they took office with a credit balance of £4 Is Id. The income for the year from all sources, including the above balance, was £7 9s Id, and the expenditure £5 14s 3d, leaving a balance in hand of £ll4s lOd. It was thought last year that more interest may be created in the library by throwing open the library one night a week for social intercourse, and in order to carry out this idea a number of games, etc., were procured. Your committee think that the results have fully justified the extra expenditure, as the interest in the library seems to have materially increased, besides furnishing profitable pastime to a lot of the young folks of the district. There has also been a considerable number of new books added to the library, but in order to keep up the efficiency of the library, and to maintain the building, your committee think that it' will be necessary to raise the subscription. You will be asked to take this into consideration this evening.—Thos. Talbot, Chairman." The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, said that in order to provide funds for maintaining the efficiency of the library it would be absolutely necessary to raise the annual subscriptions He pointed out that 2s was a ridiculously . low subscription for the beuefit to be derived. Mr Fraser, in seconding the adoption of the report, | said he thought it would be unwise to raise the subscription very materially, as the experience of former yeiirs showed that if a large subscription were charged the library would not be patronised. He admitted that 2s was a very low figure, but he thought it would be better to try ' and raise funds by a concert or some such means. Several gentlemen took part in the discussion, the general tenor of which was to make the subscription as low aa possible. It was finally resolved that the subscription for the ensuing year be three shillings. It was resolved to open the t library-room one night a week for social intercourse, as heretofore. It was decided to get up a concert in aid of the funds at an early date. The old committee was. unauimously re-elected for another year. Mr T. Talbot was proposed as chairman again, but he said that, while thanking them for their confidence, he would rather that some other gentleman took the office, as he was a good distance from the library, and it wanted more attention than he coald give it, Mr J. Rentoul was elected chairman for the ensuing year. A vote of i hanks to the out-goiug chairman and committee brought the meeting to a close.
