GAPES’S VALLEY RACES.
The annual Cockatoos’ Races were held on Thursday last on Mr Lovegrove’s paddock, 0-apes’s Valley, and were the best ever held in that district. There was a large number of people present from Geraldine and other parts of the district, Mr Muudell’s couch taking a good load, and others driving in private conveyances and some riding on horseback. Refreshments were supplied on the ground, and a splendid day’s sport was indulged in, the onlookers having the satisfaction of knowing that they were watching genuine trials ox horseflesh and no+hing more. The entries were numerous, and some of the races caused a great amount of fun. Mr 11. Hood made an excellent starter, and the clerk of the course was Mr C. Squire. The races commenced about 2 p.m. and finished at 6 p.m. Fifteen per cent, was deducted from the stakes in aid of the local school fnnds, and at night a social was also held in aid of the school. The results of the racing are as under : The Gates’s Valley Tumble-Down Tally-Ho, over six flights of hurdles. 1 mile ; entrance, 3s 6d. Mr Mac’s Dick (Owner) 1 Mr Lovegrove’s Mary ... (Owner) 2 Seven started. Dick held back well from the start, and made a big race o£ it up the straight, and won easily. At the second hurdle Tilford’s horse fell on the top of him, and gave the rider a nasty shakingjup, but he soon got round all right. The Maiden Crackup Trot, 1J mile, lOst up ; entrance, 3s. Mr Gould’s Feluka ... (Owner) 1 Mr Warner’s Don ... (Owner) 2 There were eight starters. At the first round Feluka led hard held, with Don whipper in. This position was maintained to the finish. Ayshire Lass finished third. The Valley Cup, 1J mile, list up; entrance, ss; 2nd horse to save stakes. Mr Prentice’s Susan ... (Owner) 1 Mr Lorgelly’a Forest Maid (Owner) 2 There were eight starters in this race, which was the beat go of the day. Corbett’s Lubra went off with a dashing lead, but broke off on to the paddock about half way round the course. Susan and Forest Maid had a big run for it. Won by a length, a head separating the second and third horses. Mac’s Dolly held back too long for the spurt, but finished a good third. The Walk, Trot, an» Gallop, mile, (£ mile each), list up; entrance, 4s. Mr LorgeUy’s Forest Maid (Owner) 1 Mr Mac’s Dick ... ... (Owner) 2 Seven started. Lorgelly’s mare walked the other horses out of sight, aud had a big lead when starting her half mile trot. The race was won on the walk. Mias Austin and Dick made a close finish of it for second place. The horses walked } a mile, trotted J a mile, and finished with a £ mile gallop. The Cockatoos’ Hack Stakes, 1 mile, entrance, 2s 6d; list up. Mr McKay’s Tommy ... (Owner) 1 Mr J. Love’s Fillis ... (Tilford) 2 There were nine starters. Patrick’s Betsy led the first round, but Tommy ran strong in the second round and won with ease. Love’s Fillis made a rattling spart up the straight for second place. The Handicap Time Trot, 1J mile; entrance, ss; Hat up; 2nd horse to save stakes. Mr Gregan’a Spalpeen 1 Mr Rayner’s Dodger ... ... ... 2 Six started. Mr Gregan’s horse won all the way. The Final Flutter, for all beaten hor-es, £ mile; entrance, 2s 6d. Mr Sugden’s Daisy 1 Mr Patrick’s Betsy 2 Mr Lawson’s Rose was the only other starter. This was a grand race, and was won by about a length.
