London, April 9. The Northumberland mine-owners and miners have formed a conciliation board for the settlement of disputes. Sydney, April 9. A meeting of Trades Union delegates decided to form a Sydney District Council, under the federation scheme drawn up at the Ballarat Congress. When the new Council is formed the Trades and Labor Council will cease to exist.
Christchurch, April 10. A meeting to consider the unemployed question was held last night. About 100 people wero present, including the local members of Parliament. The Mayor presided. A report brought up by the committee showed that 250 persons had signed as out of work. Out of these 27 had been struck off as owning property. The following resolution was passed ; “ That the mayor be requested to communicate with the Government by telegraph, urging them (1) to give £ for £ to the local bodies in this provincial district to enable them to put relief works into immediate operation; (2) to establish an allotment system near Christchurch and the principal towns in Canterbury ; (3) to establish a State farm or more than oue in Canterbury; (4) that instructions be given to the various departments of the public service to stop any Government employees from working overtime, especially in railway workshops, with a view to the absorption of the present unemployed.” The meeting adjourued for a week to receive a reply.
The results of the ballots taken in connection with the New Zealand Shearers’ and Laborers’ Union are as follow: —In favour of changing name to New Zealand Workers Union, 500; against, 146. In favour of establishing a newspaper similar to Australian Worker, 400; against, 246. In favour of adopting death benefit scheme, 390; against, 236. In favour of the Union importing sheep shears, r 393 ; against, 259. In favour of raising the subscription to 10s per annum, 344 ; against, 302. The vicepresidents chosen were T. Brown, G. Pearce, and W. Wills. Trustees—A. Shirley, H. Mellon, and J. Sullivan. Auditors —E. Burrell, and W. Singleton. The executive elected for the ensuing twelve mouths were —president, J. W. Kelly M.H.R.; treasurer, H. Hi. Mann; secretary, J. O’Brien.
