GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I have • seen the Geraldine Guardian of the 10th with a report of the meeting of the Geraldine Road Board on Monday last. I observe, under the head “ a new County Council for Geraldine and Mount Peel,” “ the chairman, at the suggestion of Mr C. G. Tripp, brought up the question of merging the. Geraldine and Mount Peel Road Boards into a County Council.” Now the fact of the case is this : I was a few days since at Woodbury and Mr Flatman talked to me about the idea of fanning a new county out of the present County of Geraldine, and asked me what I thought of it. I asked him what his ideas were ? He said to form the Geraldine and Mount Peel Road Boards into “ one ” county. I said “ Why not make the ‘ Ar iwhenui River ’ as a boundary.” He said that would not do, for certain reasons, but suggested Mount Peel and Geraldine alone. I said
“ you had better talk it over with your board, and come to the Mount Peel Road Board with your ideas, and you will see our opinion. As far as I see it at present I see no objection , but it will have to be well thought out.” That is all I know of the matter, except that on Monday last I met Mr Flatman in Geraldine, and he said that a deputation, as I suggested, was going to wait on the Mount Peel Road Board at its next meeting. I said “ Come with full particulars and show us the advantage we shall gain over our present position.” The public will now see the idea never originated from myself. I don’t know who suggested it to Mr Flatman first of all. I have no doubt it may be to our advantage to form a county, but we must be shown the advantage of it before we consent to it. The deputation, as 1 suggested from the Geraldine Road Board, will I hope do good in explaining what the Geraldine Bead Board ivish, but I wish the ratepayers distinctly to understand it is not my idea, and never originated from me.—l have, etc.,
0. G. Tripp.
