Miss Susan Francis is instituting proceedings against Sir Francis Cook for breach of promise of marriage, and accuses him of serious immoral offences. The Earl of Westmoreland is selling his estates in Northamptonshire (after being in possession of his ancestors and himself for three centuries), in order to enable his tenants to purchase the freehold. March 19. , Counsel for the woman who was proceeding against Sir Francis Cook for breach of promise withdrew the charge, and the Court entered up a verdict for defendant. In an interview with the colonial representatives, Mr Campbell-Bannerman, Secretary for War, cordially approved the suggestion of a federal regiment of artillery as the beginning of complete federation of Australian corps; also as to uniform, drill, and organisation. He promised to undertake to select the best English officer as federal commander, and stated that he recognised the value of the Pacific cable when constructed for strategic purposes. The Pacific route too for a mail service would be of paramount importance. Mr Reid, of Melbourne, urged that Canada, Australia, and Great Britain should guarantee interest on the cost of the Pacific cable equally, and in addition to all the points which have been fully cabled, he insisted upon the British naval supremacy. He declared that all thinkers, or at all events the most important of prominent men, favoured the present connection between Australia and the Mother Country. The Daily News says that Russia intends to withdraw her Embassy from Servia owing to the return of ex-King Milan. Pabis, March 19. The French Chamber has passed a vote of £6OOO to establish a Ministry for the Colonies. The Senate having refused to ratify the Chamber of Deputies’ vote in favour of the establishment of a Ministry for the Colonies, Mr Perier has threatened to resigu as head of the Government. The question is to be discussed again in the Senate to-morrow. The sentence of death passed on the brothers Rodriqnes at Brest for the murder of a schooner’s crew in the South Pacific Ocean, has been commuted to penal servitude for life. March 20. In the Senate to-day the rejection of the vote for the establishment of a Ministry for the Colonies was re-opened, and on a division the decision of the Chamber of Deputies, agreeing to such a department was affirmed. The motion, was, however, carried subject to the importation of a limitation as to the powers of the Ministers. M. Devillers, the French Envoy in Siam, says that the French Government intend to retain Chantabun until justice is done. Vienna, March 20. A severe snowstorm has been experienced in Austria, and several lives were lost. Rome, March 18. Queen Victoria arrived at Florence and met with a most enthusiastic welcome. Belgrade, March 19. The Synod have annulled the divorce of King Milan and Queen Natalie, and the latter returns to Servia. Bangkok, March 19. The Mandarin Pharayo has been acquitted of the murder of Inspector Grosgrum, the massacre of whose party was the ostensible cause of the quarrel between France and Siam. Though other Europeans in Bangkok are satisfied of the fairness of the trial, the French insist that Pharayo shall’ be tried again before French and Siamese Judges. New York, March 20. The city police to-night raided an Italian gambling den. . The gamblers were present in large numbers, and being armed with revolvers and knives resisted desperately. The result was a severe conflict, in which nineteen of the foreigners were wounded, three seriously, but so far as is known none of the cases resulted fatally. The raid was very successfully’ carried out, and upwards of sixty of those who were playing in the rooms were arrested and conducted to the police barracks. An oil tank exploded in San Antonio, in Texas, resulting in the death of twenty persons. Sr. Johns, March 19. 4 disabled which has arrived in Newfoundland waters, reports that a large steamer, the name of which she was unable to obtain, with her crew, suddenly sank in crossing the Atlantic. A violent storm was raging at the time, and those on the schooner were unable to render any assistance whatever. Rio de Janeiro, March 19. The insurgents are maintaining the rebellion jn province, The Government have b'eph defeated in the elections in Pernambuco Province. A Portuguese warship is taking Admiral De Gama to Buenos Ayres. The Salta Coiirt has postponed further proceedings against Jabez Spencer Balfour until next month, AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, March 19, The Now Australia delegates state that the first men wore expelled for making {also charges against the character of one of the Ipadeip of the expedition, and others for repeatedly breaking rules. Over 3QOO men are now on tbo field at Wyalong, and hundreds are arriving daily. The held so far is purely a reeling one. A payable alluvial field has been discovered at Wallandbrion, near Murrumburrah. One hundred and fifty-live tons from the Wyalong field have yielded IDOozs of gold, A man named Considine, who was alleged to have been creating a disturbance at Broken Hill, assaulted two policemen who interfered with a crowbar. One was badly injured, and the other constable tired upon and shut Ccmsidiuc dead.
March 20. The schooner Mabel White collided with some wreckage off Richmond Heads and sank. The crew had a very .narrow escape, but managed to .get clear of the sinking vessel in the boat, and were picked up by a passing ateamer and safely conveyed into port. Constables White and'Shaler have been ( arrested for the manslaughter of Considine at Broken Hill. A township is rapidly . springing into existence at Wyalong, where gold was discovered recently. The watering places on the way are a picturesque spectacle, and every evening they are surrounded by hundreds of camp fires., The rush to the field continues unabated, and fresh discoveries are reported almost daily. Newcastle, March 20. The Town Council have, agreed to urge the municipalities of .the . colony to ask the Government to 'Gladstone to visit Australia. Melbourne, March . 19. Knox,, who was convicted of the murder of the young man Craubour, whose father’s shop he attempted to rob, was executed to-day. Death was instantaneous. Young, secretary to Michaelis Hallenstein and Company, leather manufacturers, has been arrested on a charge of embezzling the moneys of the firm. It is expected that the defalcations will amount to £SOOO. March 20 f . . A man named Green and his wife were to-day tried for the murder of a woman by the performance of an illegal operation. Green was sentenced to death, but the woman was acquitted. The jury in the libel action against the Evening Standard by the promoters of a village settlement, had to be discharged owing the foreman going to the Standard office to buy a back number of the paper and stating, on being charged 6d for the copy, that “It is a swindle, and as I am on the jury will make him sit up.” The judge acquitted the foreman of improper motives, but ordered a fresh jury. Brisbane, March 19. Cooktown is being visited by a fever epidemic of an extent unparalleled since 1876. Fortunately no cases have yet been attended by fatal results. Perth, March 19.
