RIFLE SHOOTING.
Ou Thursday the competitiou for marksmen's medal by the South Canterbury battalion took place ou the range of the Temuka Rifles under the supervision of Lieut.-Colonel Bailey and Staff Sergt. Major Jones. The light was good and there was little wind. Competitors, however, complained of a slight " mirage " which interfered somewhat with their shooting, especially at long ranges. The ranges were 200 yards (standing), 300 yards (kneeling), 500 yards any military position. The winner proved to bu P.O. Waugh of the Timaru Navala with a score of 82. Private Inkater, of Waimate, won with the same score last year. The year previous the medal was won by won by Private Pearson.
