CRICKET.
ASHLEY COUNTY V. OEHALDtNE. Tho above match came off yesterday ou the Geraldiue Domain, the weather being perfect, but the light in the forenoon was rather bad for cricket. The ground was in splendid order. Geraldine won the toss and decided to bat. Beckitt and F. Wilson Smith were sent in to face the bowling of Urn and Garty. Urn’s first over was a maiden, and in his next over took Smith’s wicket before the latter had broken his “ duck,” although 2 leg byes were scored from him. H. W. Moore then joined Beckitt. Beckitt got Garty’s first ball in his second over nicely to leg for two, but runs came rather slowly. Owing no doubt to the bad light Urn clean bowled Moore for two, and likewise dismissed B. li. Macdonald second ball. Score : 3 wickets, 13 runs. F. Fish filled tho vacancy and runs came freely. Tho bowling was shortly afterwards changed, Mansell taking Garty’s place. Beckitt hit iiis first hall from Mansell prettily to leg through the fence for four. With the score standing at 47 Beckitt was given out leg before wicket after playing a good game for 19. Sugden followed on for Geraldine, and after a brilliantly played? was cuight by Mansell. Score : 5 wickets 58 runs. 11. 11. Poarpoiut joined Fish, and the latter tlitu gave a chance in the slips, which was beautifully taken by Sale. Fish, whoso icoro stood at 28, played a very carcfuliunings, and hitout splendidly when ho {jot a chance. W. K, Mao dug aid (cajp&tiu) took Fish's plage^
Pearpoiut’s wicket next fell with a ball from Good, the latter having been put on to bowl in place of Mansell. W. M. Moore, the next batsman, hit out freely, but was soon dismissed by Good for 9. Score : 8 wickets, 84 runs. R. Morrison took up the position, and made things lively by hard hitting. One of his hits off Good was well run out for 3, and the next off Uru Morrison hit the Maori bowler for 6 far over the fence in deep field to the hedge on the other side. Morrison then gave rather a difficult chance by skying a ball from Good into deep field. Sale made a splendid attempt and got hold of the ball, bnt dropped it. Lunch time was then called Morrison having knocked up 23 runs in very short time. Score: 8 wickets, 110 runs. An adjournment was made at 12.30 for lunch at Hood’s Geraldine Hotel. After lunch Morrison cut Good for 1, and was then caught by Worner. Thomson was sent to the right about by Good and the innings closed for 112. The visitors sent in Bailey ahd Garty to the bowling of Fish and Pearpoint. The latter immediately sent Garty home with a difficult break, and Fish demolished Bailey with a rattling ball. Score: 2 wickets 2 runs. Clayton sent Pearpoint by a brilliant hit through the fence for four. One of the best Ashely bats (Warner), had the misfortune to be run out. Clayton skied a ball from Fish, which the latter mad© a good try for, bnt failed; the ball, however, was smartly thrown in and Warner dismissed, run out. A ball from Pearpoint put the set on Sale for 1, and Fish treated Allen in a like manner for 1. Score: 6 wickets for 24. Clayton and Mansell made a good stand till the latter gave an easy chance, which Sugden took advantage of. Score: 6 wickets for 40 runs. Uru was expected to turn the .takes a little, but Fish took his wicket first ball. He hit out fiercely, but the ball was too much for him. Fish followed up this good play with another ball, which did for Clayton. Good was disposed of with a catch by W. K. Macdonald, and Mullen with a catch by W. M. Moore, the innings closing with 47 at 3.45 p.m. Ashley followed on with Uru and Bailey facing the bowling of Beckitt and H. W. Moore. After making three runs, Uru retired, fagged ont. W. M. Moore dispensed with Sale with a nice left hand catch, and the game closed at 4.15 p.m, with Ashley County 2nd innings 16 for 2 wickets. The fielding of both teams was a treat to watch, especially that of
