No. 30G—Erecting a footbridge at Skinner’s Creek—Petor Billings, £l3 lbs; Richard Richards, £l3 Ts Gd. Peter Billings’s tender was accepted, because ho had carried out the latt contract so satisfactorily and his price was below hoard’s estimate, and the difference between the tenders was small. COKRESTONDENCE. Correspondence was road and dealt with as follows : Prom Harbor Board Office, Timani, notifying that tho rate for tho current year would probably ho tho tamo as last year. From Mr J. P. Smith, surveyor, sending account for work done on read reserve! d 173 from Wroathall’s fence by Kakahu hill to S.E. corner of B.S. 2‘UO3,
From Mr Wm. Lynn, Te Moana, ap plying to have the hill on road leading to his perpetual-lease section 36098, Waitohi Hills, formed. The “ thirds ” accrued on section amounted to over £IOO, of which £ls had already been spent.—The board cannot do the work applied for until the Land Board give consent, and agree to pay thirds accrued. Mr Lynn’s letter to be forwarded to Land Board.
From Mr C. Jessep, Te Moana, re about some five chains of road near his property which required attention.— Similar applications having been refused until the Land Board gives consent and agrees to pay over “third,” the board regrets it cannot undertake the work. Letter to be forwarded to Land Board.
From Mr T. H. Wigley, with reference to road pegs.—Board is prepared to do the work as soon as the road pegs are replaced by a licensed surveyor. From Dr O. J. Foster, Christchurch, agreeing to allow board to take gravel from R.S. 23629 at £4 rental per annum. —Resolved—“ That Dr Foster’s offer re gravel from R.S. 23629 at a rental of £4 per annum be accepted for one year; twopence per yard to be paid for any shingle taken from the section in any following year or years by board.” From Mr John Jackson, Timaru, sending quotations for timber. —Left with overseer to deal with. From Bank of New South Wales, re renewal of fixed deposit. overseer's report. The overseer reported :—This being the harvest month and the weather being very broken has interfered with the work in hand to a slight extent. Contracts—No. 392, suspension bridge at Geraldine, was completed in a very satisfactory manner on the 15th January, and taken over from the contractor. Ten days later some person cut the suspension wires and let down the floor of the bridge. £2O reward has been advertised for the detection of the offender, but so far without result. The bridge has been repaired and is now open for traffic. No. 393, shingling near Pearse’s, Waitohi Downs : This work is in progress, and will shortly be completed, the wet having been a drawback. Tenders have been invited for suspension bridge at Skinner’s creek, and for clearing scrub at Kakahu Bush. Footway—A plank footway on trestles has been placed over the Kakahu River at Sharp’s crossing, but will be liable to be washed down by a heavy flood, as it is only a temporary affair. Temple’s Ford—The atop banks at this ford- have been erected, the small freshes in the river giving a good deal of trouble during the time; and as the shingle is constantly accumulating and raising the shingle fan, it will require constant attention to prevent overflow. Owing to the team leaving for harvest the cutting decided on by members has not been made through the shingle spit below. Bussell’s Creek—l have inspected the crossing and find a bridge for stock on the lower side of road would require to be about 34 feet in length. This, with ironbark bearers, wing rails, and approaches, would cost, say £ —. Bridge at Donkin’s Creek Having been disappointed in obtaining the ironbark timber which the board had under offer and agreed to purchase at the last meeting, I have been unable to invite tenders for the above bridge, having no suitable timber in stock. I have now an offer of some timber from another firm, .although not exactly the scantling required, I could work it in at little excess in cost. Works applied for — Webb and others, Barker’s Gully Road : The ground is very wet and broken. To drain and form a portion of the road which is most required would cost about £ . This, I think, would be sufficient for present requirements, as the traffic in that direction is light. Messrs Wigley and Sullivan’s application : The road line at this place is unfenced, and, as no pegs or road marks are to be found, it is impossible to locate the exact line of road. 1 would suggest that the owners of the land should either fence one side of the road, or to be called upou to replace the survey pegs, which appear to have been ploughed out. Day men—The numerous email freshes during the past month have kept the day men busy in attending to the various crossings, over which there is a good deal of binder traffic just now. Horse feed—A supply of oats will be required for the dray horse. Rates—As ordered I have taken out summonses for a few of the defaulting ratepayers; a portion have since paid, two or three have not done so, and will have to appear before the R.M. on the 20th inst. The outstanding rates amount to £ls 7s 6d. Small birds —Heads and eggs come in very slowly and in small numbers, only £9 Os 2d bias been paid out this season to date. The boys declare the price given for eggs is too low to cover wear and tear of clothes in obtaining them.—l have, etc.,
Wll. Shiehs, Overseer. Resolved that the catting at the shingle spit below Temple’s Ford be made. Re Russel’s Creek stock bridge— The board decided to hold the matter over for one month to hear objections. Work to be done at Barker’s Gully road when Mr Barker cleans his creeks. Timber to be purchased by Mr Shiers for jDoukiu’s creek bridge. Tenders to te called for bushels of oats. Report on purchase of small birds heads and eggs considered unsatisfactory. SUSPENSION*®*!! GE.
Resolved — ft That the clerk, Mr Shiers, be authorised to iake proceedings in the R.M. Court against any person or persons found damaging the suspension bridge lately erected at Geraldine. Also that the attention of the police be drawn to the matter.”
INTERVIEW. Mr G. O’Neil waited on the board applying for a gravel reserve at Orari.—Mr O’Neil can have the reserve at 7s 6d per annum, provided fencing isdone at his own cost.
ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £124 Os 8d were passed for payment. The board then rose.
