ST. SAVIOUR'S SUNDAY SCHOOL, TEMUKA.
The annual distribution of prizes at this Brhool took place on Sunday last in the afternoon. There was a large attendance of parents, friends, and scholars. The incumbent, Rev. Mr Gillam, in presenting the prizes, wished it to be understood that they were awarded strictly according to the marks given by teachers each week for attendance, conduct, and lessons learned. He would have been glad to have seen prizes of greater value given, but their parishioners had been dipping rather deeply into their pockets of late for Church funds, and there was not quite so much money available for prizes as usual. At the time ihey were collecting money for the school the churchwardens were asking for special collections on the occasion of the bishop'a visit. Those collections amounted to £55. He (Mr Gillam) expressed his satisfaction, at the splendid discipline of the school, and his indebtedness to their faithful superintendent, Mr Robert Pinckney, whom all the children loved and respected. The last diocesan examination was seriously interfered with by the measles, and was not satisfactory. He recommended Lottie Gaze and Harold Opie for special prizes for their papers at that examination, and thought that at least 50 scholars in the upper standards should present themselves for examination this year. The incumbent concluded by urging the teachers to carefully prepare their lessons week by week, and stated that text books on the various standard subjects would be supplied them. Armitage), Annie Mcßratney 2, Grace Greaves 3, Lottie Gaze 4, Emma Sloane 5, Louisa Radford 6, Ethel Patrick (special). Boys: Harold Opie 1, George Claridge 2, Richard Lloyd 3, Leonard Radford 4.
