IMPERIAL POLITICS.
London, Dec. 14. The Indian Loan Bill has been read a second time. Deo. 18. In announcing the Christmas Vacation in the House of Commons Mr Gladstone said that owing to the obstruction practised by the Opposition he was compelled to restrict the holiday to five days. Mr A. J. Balfour retorted that the Government were attempting to trample on and coerce the Opposition. The, House of Commons will adjourn -f'om the 22nd to the 27th instant for the Christmas holidays. All sections of members appear greatly discontented. In the House of Commons the Premier will move an amendment to Lord George Hamilton’s motion urging the increase of the Navy, to the effect that the House relies on the Ministry to submit ■ fitting proposals respecting the Navy in due time. The discussion will be taken on Tuesday. Mr Bruce, a Conservative, has been returned unopposed for the vacant seat of Brighton, caused by the resignation of Sir W\ T. Harriot. The Government refuse to abandon the poor law clauses in the Parish Councils Bill, though their retention imperils the passage of the measure. The report that the Cabinet had decided to spend £8,000,000 to increase the Navy, is stated to be premature, and this is the reason why the Opposition are seeking to bring pressure to bear on the Government through the medium of Lord G. Hamilton’s motion.
