CRICKET.

TEMUKA Ist V. GERALDINE Ist. The above match was played on the Domain, Geraldine, on Saturday afternoon last. The weather was favorable but the ground was rather out of order, owing to recent rain. The match was a very one-sided affair, as will be seen from the Jesuits below. The Temuka team were decidedly weak in batting, and made a poor stand before the strong bowling of Fish and Pearpoint. Fish, particularly in bowling, was very destructive, and had the pleasure once of doing the “hat trick,” and in toto taking S wickets for 2 runs. The play taken all round was most peculiar. Temuka went to the wicket first, and their batsmen went out rapidly in succession with the first or second ball. It was only when Dr Hayes and Ferguson got together that any kind of a stand was made at all. Fish put Ferguson out with a very difficult one-hand catch, and Bethuue made a clever catch off Dr Hayes. Geraldine opened their innings with H. W. Moore and F. Wilson Smith, whose wickets each fell with the second ball from Low and Gillespie respectively. B. R. Macdonald was treated likewise, and the Captain managed to score two “ ones ” before being nicely caught by Low. Thus four of Geraldine’s best batsmen were then out for 6 runs. This looked like a repitition of Temuka’s innings, but Pearpoint coming next hit out fearlessly for a couple of “ twos,” aud finished with 9 to his credit. Score—s oul for 15 runs. Then with Beckett and Fish together the score went up wonderfully. Fish played a careful bat for 19. Beckett, who played every ball skilfully, made his mark by carrying his bat for 69, making 35 “ ones,” 14 “ twos,” one “ three,” and a “four.” Morrison knocked up the decent score of 21, and Bethune aud Thomson both batted well. The fielding of both teams was very good. The following are the results: TEMUKA.
