A PUBLIC GRIEVANCE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —As a pretty strong feeling of dissatisfaction prevails in Temuka and the district, concerning the application of the funds in connection with the Town Park and Cemetery, I wish, with your permission, through your columns, to give tangible expression to it, in the hope that it may lead to a better understanding and adjustment of the matter. The public has an undoubted right to know how its money is expended, and those who are entrusted with its disbursement should not be an irresponsible body, holding as it were a roving commission to dispose of the public funds in their hands without question or account, but should prove their responsibility and trust by submitting periodically a duly audited statement of receipts and expenditure, either to the public generally or a committee acting in its interests. Now, nothing of the sort has been done in connection with the funds furnished by the public or Temuka for the proper management of its Park and Cemetery, and the public naturally feels that it is not being treat* d in a business-like manner, which is sufficient to create a strong feeling of distrust and dissatisfaction. Under these circumstances it was thought advisable that the managing or governing body of the Park and Cemetery should be made elective, and representations to that effect were made at the end of the previous session of Parliament to the member for the district, Mr Rhodes, but as nothing practical had resulted from this application, a provisional committee or commission was appointed by a large number of the ratepayers to inquire through Mr Rhodes if anything bad been done in f/he matter. He was understood to say that kd bad taken steps in the direction indicated, J.n the meantime th s special committee met .occasionally to discuss the matter and notify progress, bet •beyond this they have done nothing, (the -whole matter still remains a mystery, nithough one would think that on the eve 0 f gortora'j. election Mr Rhodes would ende-wu t 0 vvit b the public of l b r vk *, Vrnfw, bwe-;er, that my remarks may t J n - j.- J ■ «oHie other of more effective measures in quarter, lam etc., A Dissatisfied Elector,.
