TEMUKA ATHLETIC SOCIETY.

A meeting of persons interested in establishing an Athletic Club was held last Tuesday evening in the Wallingford Hotel. There was a good attendance. Mr A. S. Jenkins was voted to the chair, and read the following report: — " To the Chairman. " At a preliminary meeting held in the Wallingford Hotel on Tuesday, October 17th, re forming an Athletic Club in Temuka, it was decided to call a public meeting re same. Our motive for forming such a club is to hold another day's sports during the year, to consist of running, walking, bicycling, jumping, wrestling, and hammer-throwing, as we don't see why Temuka can't run more than one day's sports in the twelve months, and taking into consideration the large number of athletes we have here. We do not wish to run against counter societies, as we think there is ample room for another day's sports, as there is no show or races in Temuka. There are plenty of holidays during the year and people go somewhere else to pass them ; whereas if there was anything in Temuka to pass them they would sooner stay here. We don't intend to run these sports on as large a scale as the Caledonian Society, as we intend it more for the encouragement of local competitors, as big money brings outsiders from all round about and don't give the local competitors any encouragement. The decision of the meeting was that we could run a very good day's sports for about fifty pounds, along with what special prizes that could be raised. " (Signed) M. Scannell, "A. S. Jenkins, " George E. Velvin." The chairman left the consideration of the resolution involved to the meeting assembled. Mr McLean asked if there was any day fixed for the extra sports day. The chairman said that was a matter for the consideration of the meeting. Mr McAulitfe asked if there was a prospect of the Caledonian Society running another day's sports. The chairman thought a meeting as proposed would not clash with the interests of the society. Mr McLean thought that there was ft small prospect of success if the society was started in opposition to the Caledonian Society. The chairman and Mr Velvin were both of t pinion that some more consideration should be given to local men, and further, in reply to enquiry, sketched out a Bcheme by which the total amount of prizes could be raised.

Some consideration of the status of probable subscribers took place, after which

Mr A.Clinch proposed—" That a society be formed for the promotion, of athletic sports, such society to be called ' The Temuka Athletic Society.' "—Sec aided by Mr Fenton, and carried. The chairman stated that the promoters thougho that a subscription >,i 5s would be sufficient to carry on the club. The following gentlemen were then appointed a provisional committee:— Messrs Scannell, Jenkins, Velvin, Fenton, and McAuliffe.

Mr G. Velviu was elected secretary pro tern and convenor, and it was agreed that another meeting be held in the course of a fortnight. About twenty persons signified their intention of either joining or becoming subscribers to the society.
