BRITISH POLITICS.
London, Oct. 19. A a speech at Preston the Marquis of Salisbury contended that the House of Lords was infinitely than Mr Gladstone, supported as it was by the country. Owing to the Government’s refusal to dissolve, they must abandon Home Rule, which he argued was equivalent to a pist'd presented at the mouths of the Clyde and the Mersey, and would make it necessary to keep an incessant watch on the coast. If the Home Rule Bill did not reappear at the autumn session he would consider that Mr Gladstone had adandoned the measure. Denominational education, he said, was becoming one of the burning question of the day. The Home Secretary, addressing a meeting at Glasgow, announced that there was no chance of the Home Rule Bill being reintroduced next session, which would be devoted entirely to British legislation. Lord Randolph Churchill contends that Mr Gladstone is now in a dilemma, as if he postpones Horae Rule in favour of English measures he is certain to lose his majority.
