TEMUKA ROAD BOARD

The regular monthly meeting of the above board was held on Tuesday. Present —Messrs J. Talbot (chairman) F. Parke, W. Snell and P. Coira. INTERVIEW Mr Seaton, Waitohi, waited upon the board and made application for a cutting into a riverbed near his premises.—The overseer explained the position of the ground, and it was agreed that the work be done. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received as follows

From Mr James Cain, applying for an extension of time to fulfil his contract at Rangitata.—Mr Cain to finish the work as quickly as possible, after which the board will consider if penalty be imposed. From The Geraldine County Council, stating that poisoned wheat would not bo laid for a few weeks, but would be recommenced on October 7th. From the same, covering cheque for £1933s lid for balance of subsidy ou rates collected.

From Mr Geo. Stewart, applying for a stock bridge over the Ohapi Greek, near Mr Gladstone’s. Mr Lewis made a similar request, at the same time drawing attention to the depth of the creek, which made it almost impossible to cross sheep. —The overseer to report on cost of same at next meeting. From Mr J. M. Greenaway, stating that'he had cleaned out drain on upper side of Rolleston’s road fronting his laud. He asked the board to pay half of the cost of same and was prepared to leave the value of the worx to the overseer. — The overseer to ascertain if the work done was one the cost of which the board were entitled to share.

From Mr Wm. Hawke, asking if the board would make a cutting to the Orari riverbed at the end of the road running through Mr F. Barker’s, near land lately occupied by Mr Higgins. —The overseer to have the work done if necessary. From Messrs Harman and atevens, asking that areas of subdivision of R.S. 7732 be corrected in accordance with Dep. Plan 1058. The occupiers were Messrs Smart, Simpson, Moore, and Goodeve. —The clerk to w rite to Property Tax Commissioner, and obtain permission to make correction asked for.

From a number of ratepayers at South Rangitata applying for the re-f jrmation afld shingling of road leading from Mr Robertson’s to the Rangitata School. — After discussion it was decided that the overseer invite tenders for the work by next meeting. From a number of ratepayers at Milford, asking the board to make a better crossing at the lower Opihi ford on the road to Seadown. The Overseer, in explanation, stated that the usual ford was too deep for crossing. Some years ago the board purchased a small piece of laud to give access to some sections lower down. The river had now set into the bank agaiu. He showed that by taking an acre ou the east side of tne roau, access could bo given to the track for years. The necessary land would have to be taken under the Public Work . Act.

A long discussion ensued upon the subject, audit was decided that the overseeer write to Mr P Wareing and ask if he would sell a piece of-laud for the purpose of giving access to the riverbed. In the case of Mr Wareing’s refusal, an estimate to be prepared of the cost of taking the laud under the Public Worts Act.

From the Timaru Harbour Board notifying that the shingle had advanced some 50 feet, and requesting the board to return plan previously sent to be remarked.

From Mr Henry Ford sending solicitor’s opinion as to gates on roads. From the Crown Lauds Commissioner suggesting that the overseer consult the Crown Lauds ranger, Mr O’Callaghan, re the expenditure of “ thirds ”|he having a thorough knowledge of settler’s requirements. TEMCKA FOOTBRIDGE. The chairman drew attention to the footbridge at the manse. Some years ago some protective work was done at tire east end, and this seemed to be effective. The present condition of the bridge was unsafe and unsightly, and as the river seemed to have left off attacking the bank it might be well if the bridge were lengthened. The overseer was asked to report on the cost of extending the bridge in its present form, and apou a lighter scale, and submit same at next meeting. overseer's report. ‘ The following is the overseer’s report : * To the chairman,’ — “ Sib, —I have the honor to report for the past mouth as follows : —Tender* have bean invited for contract No. 69, repairs to road between Education Repairs 938 and 939. Contract Ho. 70, shingle on road by Airay’s, and contract Ho. 71, cutting drain on road running from the lower part of Riverslea to the Canal drain. During the month shingle repairs have been done to the Winchester and Beach road, Clyne’s road and Boiling Down road. The contractor for forming part of the Main South road informs me that he declines to proceed with the second section of this work (Contract 64), and that he has completed the first section (Contract No. 65). I have ar ranged to commence repairs to the bridge over creek on the Kakahu road. Works requiring to be done—White’s Road : There is about 130 chains of +his road that requires shingling with 15 cubic yards to the chain. This would cost about £—. North Orari Road: About 200 chains of this road requires shingling, the cost would be about £—. Road by Budd’s: About 40 chains of this road requires shingling with 15 yards to the chain ; this and a few yards of clay that it will be necessary to cart on before the shingle, will cost about £—. Talbot’s Road: About 90 chains of this road requires a light coat of river shingle, say about eight yards to the chain, this would cost about £—. About 130 chains of the road running from the plantation near the homestead of the late Mr A. Macdonald to the school corner at Orton, requires to bj recrowned. This would cost about £ —. The road running from Newlands comer to the road that runs from the Beach to the Raugitata railway station requires forming. Consideration of other works was postponed. At the overseer’s suggestion, it was agreed to shingle a small portion of the road loading to the Waitohi school. TENDERS. Tenders were received as follows : Contract No. 69, carting shingle at Rangitata—P, O’Mara, 2s 3d; J. Cain, Is lOd (accepted). Contract No. 70, carting shingle at Rolleston’s roads—P. O’Mara, 240 yards at Is 9d, 260 yards at 2s 9d; J. Davis, 120 yards at la sd, 120 yards at Is 4d, and 260 yards at Is 7Jd (accepted). Contract No. 71, cutting drain— P. Small, 17s 6d per chain; D. Mclnues, 14s 6d; O, McAuliffe, 7s per chain (accepted). ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £327 15s 9d, including £270 8s 7d Timaru Harbor Board levy, were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
