Mr L. Courtney will move the rejection of the Home Rule Bill on the motion for the third reading.
Mr Gladstone, in replying to the advocates of Scotch disestablishment, said that caution was necessary, as English opponents had shown a strong determination to resist any interference with the Church of Wales and Scotland.
Mr J. Morley, speaking at Newcastle, said that the Government wera determined to carry measures of social reform and complete their programme. There was, he added, a strong bond of sympathy between the British and Irish democracy. August 28.
In reply to a question in the House of Commons, Mr Buxton, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, said that the Government had forbidden the Chartered Company to retaliate upon Lobengula without Imperial authority. The Government have withdrawn the Scottish Suspensory Bill.
In the discussion in the House of Comon the Navy Estimates, Sir N. Kaye Shuttle worth, Secretary to the Admiralty, announced that it was the intention of the Government to materially strengthen the Mediterranean fleet. Sir Edward J. Reid, member for Cardiff, named twelve of the first-class warships which he declared would turn turtle like H.M.S. Victoria if rammed, as they were of faulty construction. The statement created a sensation in the House.
