Bm - % York, August 28. Excursion train* MUded at Long Island. Sixteen passenger* Were killed and 50 injured. Auguat 29. The late railway accident was caused by an excursion train overtaking a special train as the latter was slowly leaving Long Island junction. The special train was entirely demolished by the shock, the rear carriages being piled in a heap on top of one another. Two unfortunate passengers were roasted to death, and many were horribly mangled. Some of the bodies were completely burned and could not be recovered. No intimation had been given to the driver of the excursion train that a special train was in front of him. Capetown, August 28.

The British South African Company estimate that it will cost £SOOO to crush King Lobengula. It ia expected that Cape Colony, at the suggestion of Mr Cecil Rhodes, will shortly annex the Chartered Company's territory, and impose an export tax on Cape diamonds to cover the cost. King Lobengula has despatched envoys to treat with Sir Henry Loch and Mr Cecil Rhodes.

An interesting experiment has been conducted at Albury |with a new meatpreserving process. The details are not disclosed, but it is Btated that a carcase operated on six weeks ago was found to bo in perfect preservation, and wholesome when cooked. It is believed that the process can be successfully applied to the exportation of meat. French papers from Noumea state that it is only a question of a few months, or perhaps earlier, when France will declare a protectorate over the New Hebrides. A curious discovery was made at the recent execution of a criminal. The guillotine in use at Noumea is found to be the one with which Louis 2CVL and many of the Girondists vyer.e .executed in Paris in 1793.

A case of smallpox is reported from Inverell. The patient is a Cingalese.

Melbourne, August 28.

Condor, convicted of murdering an Indian hawker,was executed to* day, death being instantaneous. He protested his innocence to the last,and it is believed that he had made a statement to a clergyman implicating others in the crime. August 29.

A singular occurrence is reported from Mount William, near Lancefield. A huge body of water fell near a house at the summit of the mount on a fine evening; about an acre of ground was torn up, aud a torrent of water, several feet deep and a hundred feet in width, rushed down the side of the mountain.
