FOOTBALL.
'WAHH FIRST V] first,
This gamp took place at Timaru on Thursday 10th inst., and resulted in a win for Union by 5 points to nil. Play commenced about a quarter past three. Waihi won the toss, and played with the wind at fchoir backs. The game was even daring first spell, Waihi, with the Wind in their favour, having slightly the best of the play. Soon after commencing the second spell, Herron (Union), potted a goal, and shortly after Warsley added a try to the score, securing the ball from a scrum at the corner flag and dropping over the line. This roused the Waihi raeu, and for the last quarter of an hour they kept their opponents busy, only the strong defence of the Union backs pre voming a score. When the play was open the game proved fast, but there was far too much “ hugging ” the leather and falling on tho ball to result in first-class football. Had it not been for this tho contest would have been a splendid exhibition of football. A strict referee is badly wanted in South Canterbury just now, as there is far too much infringing of the rules, which is sure in time to pro mote a had style of play, For Waihi
A. Shallard played best back, T. Hart and F. Fish also played well. Waihi back’s are two slow in passing, and they should also kick more. The collaring on tins occasion was not good. Of the forwards F. Shallard, D. Stewart, A. Hart, and J. Richa-di were the most conspicuous. For the Union *■>clean and Hobbs played fine all round games; their collaring, running, and kicking being very good, Macintosh also played fair, his kicking being sure, Quinn and Gardiner played best forward.
