DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.
At the Burnside Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted : Fat Cattle—2l2 yarded, half of which were prime beef, with a few pens extra heavy, the balance ranging from inferi r to very medium. A good demand existed f >r best cattle, and these realised prices fully up to those obtaining lately, while for any other sorts competition was less active. Best bullocks brought £lO 15s to ,1-12 12s Gd ; medium weights, £7 15s to £lO ; light and low quality, £G to £7 10s; best cows, £8 17s Gd to £lO 12s Gd; medium to good, £6 to £8 10s; light and aged, £3 2s6dto £5 15s. Fat Sheep—l9B3 penned, including 140 merino wethers, medium quality. Competition was fairly active, the lot being sold at prices comparing favorably with those of the previous week. Best crossbred wethers brought 15s Gd to 18s 3d ; two small pens extra heavy, 18s Gd to .! 9s Gd; medium to good, 13s to 15s 3d ; host do ewes, 14s 9d to 16s 9d; one pen extra heavy, 18s 9d; medium to good, 12s to 14s Gd; merino wethers, 7s 3d to 7s 9d.
Pigs—loß penned, all of which were ;.old under good competition at prices in favor of sellers. Slips brought 15s Gd to 19s; stores, 21s to 245; porkers, 26s to 34s ; a few extra heavy sows sold at 59s to 80s each.
Store Cattle —A very fair demand exists, all sorts are inquired for, and any lots for sale would realise prices quite in sympathy with the high rates now ruling for fat stock. The situation at the moment is certainly in favor of the seller. Store Sheep—The business done in these now is very much less extensive, confined mostly to the small mixed lots usually changing hands at this season of the year. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.

MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL,
London, August 15
Lord Onslow's Committee expect that compulsory branding will cause some tempor ry inconvenience in the meat trade, but that when imported meat becomes better known its popularity will increase. The Committee think it unlikely that imported meat will ever exceed in quality the linest English mutton, but that it will easily excel inferior.
The new English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank has beeu registered, with a capital of £1,575,000. August 16.
Shares in the Union Steam (Ship Company, £8 10s; New Zealand Shipping Company, £3 ; Shaw, Saville Co., £6 10s. Tlie quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,956,000 quarters, and for tho Continent 1,308,000 quarters. The cargoes of wheat ex barques Woodville and VVillowbauk, from Lyttelton, have beeu sold at 27s Gd.
Money is easier, and bills are discounted at a shade under 4 per ceiit. Merchants expect a large demand for factory-made butter this winter, provided prime quality is shipped. The liabilities cf Berket, Spelling and Company, corn factors, Mark Lane, are stated at £64,000, of which £41,000 is unsecured. • The assets are only £6OOO.
A section of the butter - brokers have nnited to provide cool storage, but they assert that it will be impossible to regulate the market by this means. Fresh shipments will always be preferred to butter from the store.
