ARBOR DAY.
A meeting of the Geraldine Arbor Day Committee was held in the Town Board Office on Monday evening. Present — Messrs A. White (chairman), Walton, Chapman, Coombs, Pye, Williams, and Faruie. Mr John Pye, on behalf of the gardeners, reported visiting the places proposed to be planted with trees on Arbor Day, and submitted the following recommendations thereon : —(1) That the planting begin in the Bush Park at the stile at Chapman’s corner, and plant north and south two rows of macrocapa and pinus insignia alternately, the first being six feet from the fence and the second row 16 feet from the fence. This would act as a splendid breakwind, and 18 trees to the chain would be required. (2) That the vacant space in the bush on the inner side of the stile be planted with ornamental trees nine feet apart, which would mean about 150 trees. The trees recommended are: Abies excelsa, abies douglassi, abies raenziesii, cupressus lawsonaia, austern pine, wellingtonia gigantea, thuja gigantea, portaqual lauril, and a few lauristina, (3) The next break in the bush should be planted with blue gums, six feet each way, as these would be valuable and would give a variety of colors to the bush. This space would take about 1000 trees. (4) If anything is done to the space between the English Church and the Volunteer Hall, one row of macrocarpa and pinus insignia should be planted at the back ; the rest of the ground to be filled up with ornamental trees, as recommended for the Bush Park. It was resolved that the report be adopted,, and that money collected for tree-planting be devoted to that purpose exclusively. The-meeting then adjourned.
