FOOTBALL.

The junior flag match, between the Union Second and Tomuka took place on the Caledonian grounds on Thursday afternoon, in weather anything bat pleasant for either players or spectators, especially the former. After playing through water, sometimes ankle deep, the game ended in a draw.—On the same day the Colonials played Waihi third. The match ended in a win for aihi by 10 points to 2. The return match New Zealand Rugby team v. New South Wales, was played on the cricket ground at Sydney on Saturday afternoon. The attendance was quite equal to the previous Saturday, aud it was estimated that 15,000 were present. The result was a great surprise, the New Zealanders being defeated by 22 points, the scores being New South Wales 25 points, New Zealand 3. The New South Wales men played a magnificent game ; in fact it was a complete revelation to their own supporters. The New Zealanders were beaten at every point in the game. The New South Wales passing at times was brilliant. Hiroa, Butland, and Wyuward were greatly missed in the New Zealand team, but this trio had had a severe knocking about in the previous games, and were quite unfit to play. Ellison and Stewart too were practically cripples, aud it was very apparent that the strain of playing five games in ten days had an appreciable effect on the New Zealanders, who played without any life, and were very stale. The following will play for Temuka Second against the Star First on Thursday at Temuka : —Full back, D. Grant ; three-quarter backs, Fenton, Greaves (captain), H. Bryan, and Robinson ; half backs, Sheen and Hooper; forwards, Mulhern, Barrett (2), Barwell, Findlay, Erwood, Collins, Spillane and Marshall. Emergencies, back, Radford ; forward, Carr. The game will start at 3 o’clock sharp, all players not able to attend will please let the captain know before next Thursday.
