GERALDINE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs W. Walton (chairman), J. W. Pye, T. Sherratt, and J. H. Dean. HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster reported:—“ Glad to say that the average attendance for the last few weeks has been such as to counterbalance the bad attendance during the early part and middle of the quarter. The average to date is :—Boys, 88.2; girls, 99.1 ; total, 187.3; weekly roll, 237; highest attendance, 212. As the average required is 185 we have 2.3 to spare, so that unless there is very bad weather next week our average is assured for the present quarter. The pupil teachers’ annual examination commences in Timaru on Tuesday, June 27 th, and it will be necessary to provide for the usual midwinter vacation, as three or four of our staff require to be present at the examination. There are a few cases of sickness in the school this week, supposed to be measles, but whether truly so or not lam not in a position to say. I propose, with the concurrence of your committee, to introduce into the school “ The Zealandia School Composition.” It will be of great assistance to the staff, and will simplify the work considerably.—l h*ve, etc., “T. Ohbynk Farnie, “ Head Master.” MID-WINTER HOLIDAYS. It was resolved—“ That the school be closed for two weeks’ mid-winter holidays, from June 23rd inst., till July 3rd.” COMPOSITION. It was decided that a letter of recommendation to the Education Board be given to Mr Farnie, asking that his publication “ The Zealandia School Composition,” be added to the list of books used in the school. The committee in criticising the publication spoke very highly of its value as an instructor in the art of composition. DAMAGE TO TREES. The chairman was instructed to call the attention of the head master to the damage done to young trees and fences by the children, THE VISITORS. The visiting committee were not present, and did not send in their report on the school. The old visiting committee were re-appointed for the ensuing month. A few accounts were passed for payment and the committee rose.
