The board’s solicitor wrote re the recent court cases with regard to the illegal removal of nightsoil, that the particulars of the pan system should be more explicitely advertised. It was resolved to attend to the solicitor’s suggestion. Mr T. Baxter waited on the board asking why he had to pay Is for single empts while other ratepayers paid at the rate of 4£d per empt. —The board saw no reason to alter the former resolution. THE SALEYARDS. Mr H. Morrison waited on the board with a petition signed by 69 raiepayers as follows :—“ We, the undersigned ratepayers, earnestly bog that you will take into consideration the further completion of your sanitary arrangements by removing the Geraldine saleyards to some more suitable place.” Mr Maslin said he was at a loss to know how the matter could be dealt with according to the petition. The board’s powers were to compel persons to abate any nuisance, and if the sanitary condition of the saleyards was improved, and the nuisance abated,he questioned whether the board had power to remove the yards. The only way to remove the yards would be by passing a special by-law with regard to stock, and this would hamper the whole town. Mr Morrison said as long as the nuisance was abated the yards could remain they were, but the sanitary arrangements of the yards must be altered. The board then went into committee to discuss the question, and the inspector’s report on the yards was read as foil >ws : “ I inspected the yards on May 3rd and found them in a very bad state, ov ing to much wet weather prior to my visit. They were then as bad as ever they were, and there was a nuisance then ; the impure water was running all over the footpath and into the water race. 1 visited them when the weather was good, and found the yards in better condition than most of the pigsties in Geraldine. I would suggest that the proprietors get notice to prevent the impure water coming out of their yards over the footpath. This could be done by having an open drain all round the yards, and pipes across the street to take the impurity to the river; also to gravel the yards and keep them in better condition. The yards on the east side of the street should be formed with a nice grade to the river, and have a good coat of gravel ” It was resolved, after discussion—- ££ That the proprietors of the Geraldine yards be asked to abate the nuisance as mentioned in the inspector’s report arising from defective drainage, and that Mr Morrison be notified of the board’s resolution.” It was also decided to give notice to auctioneers that they must not sell stock, in drays or otherwise, on the public streets. STREET CROSSINGS. A letter was received from the Christchurch Council respecting the cost of making street crossings, and it was resolved three asphalt crossings, one near the Geraldine Hotel, one at the postoffice, and one at Mr J. Albert’s corner. FIXED DEPOSIT. It was resolved to place £250 at fixed deposit with the Bank of New Zealand. GERALDINE FIRE BRIGADE. The annual subsidy of £ls to the Geraldine Fire Brigade was passed for payment. REPORTS. The overseer’s report on work done, and the ranger’s report op stray cattle, w r ere read. RAY-SHEET. The pay-sheet for the month amounted to £2O lls 3d. LARRIKINISM. It was reported that larrikins had been tampering with the street lamps, and it was decided to request the police to take steps to prevent a recurrence of the same. The board then rose.
