TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), J, Fraser, W. Snell, P. Coira, and F. Parke. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. Mr Fraser proposed that Mr J. Talbot be re-elected chairman for the ensuing term of the board.—Seconded by Mr Snell, and carried unanimously. Mr Talbot briefly returned thanks, and said that his duties were lightened by the pleasure of working with members who took so much interest in the proceedings of the board. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Mr 0. Bisset, drawing attention to the road through R.S. 8078, and asking that the water might be eased from same. —Overseer to inspect, with authority to attend to same.
From Mr T. White, asking that the drain on Boiling Down road be cleaned. —To be done on usual conditions.
From Mr J. Day, stating that he would like to know the intention of the board with regard to putting a culvert on Canal drain fronting his section. —Mr Day to be offered usual terms, viz., the board to supply the timber. From the Geraldine Road Board, forwarding copies of resolutions passed at a conference of chairmen and members of Road Boards held at Geraldine upon the small birds question, etc. —A report of this meeting has already appeared.—Resolu tion No. 3, which referred to the proposal to add 5 per cent, to the amount of rates overdue 3 months, was discussed, and the board was of opinion that the period should be extended to six months, when 5 per cent, would be added, and 10 per cent, at the end of nine months.—The other resolutions were approved.
From the Secretary Acclimatisation Society, stating that at a meeting of the society the question of small birds’ nuisance was discussed, and it was agreed that a system of regular poisoning at specified dates would be of advantage. The board were asked to support the resolution. —It was agreed to forward the circular to the Geraldine County Council, and recommend it for consideration at the proposed conference of chairmen. Four circulars were received re poisoned wheat.—Resolved that a small quantity bo obtained from Mr Dann, until the County Council decide what definite steps are to be taken.
From Mr A. M. Clark, enclosing title to road through Riverslea.—The same to ‘be accepted, and tenders called for work necessary to open the road. From W. McCully and other?, requssting that the road through the swamp from Rolleston’s road be made pass-able for light traffic.—Overseer to report at next meeting. From Mr R. Williams and others, requesting that the main Waitohi road adjoining Mr Friel’s section be formed full width.—Left to the overseer to get the work done, if cost does not exceed £7. From Mr J. Airay, asking that about ten chains of road fronting his section be shingled. —Overseer to report. From Mr A. M. Smith, thanking the members of board for expression of sympathy with Mrs Ballance. From the Geraldine County Council, notifying that the sum of £ll4 Is 2d, being contribution due for half year ending Sept. 30, 1893, to South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board,is now due, and requesting that the same be paid to the credit of the board at the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru. From the Temuka Town Board, drawing attention to a nuisance existing at the dipping yards, and trusting that the same may be remedied.—To be forwarded to Mr Mundell, with a request that he will take what steps he can to remedy the matter complained of. Also, that Mr Mundell’s attention be drawn to the inconvenience caused by sales being carried on upon the public road opposite the yards, and ask that they be discontinued. From Mr D, Charteris, asking that his name be removed from roll in respect of sections owned by Mr John Martin, and lately occupied by him.—Agreed to. From Mr W. Taggart, asking that Mr E. B. Amyes’ name be substituted for his in respect of sections 3183 and 32,517. Agreed to. From the Timaru Harbor Board, covering plan of harbor showing depth of water, and position of shingle accumulation. From Mr Henry Wright and others, drawing attention to that portion of the Main South road running through Buddenklau’s Island, and asking that the same be put in good order,—Overseer to inspect apd suggest what can be done to yeniedy the matter. From Messrs Harman & Stevens, advising that that part of R.S. 7732, lately occupied by T. Simpson, contains 176 acres, as per plan, and asking see that it is correct on the roll. From Mr J. Pearce, asking that the drain on the north side of the road leading to Mr F, Austin’s be cleaned.—Overseer to inspect and deal with same at discretion. overseer’s report. The overseer reported upon works in hand, and in accordance with his report it was resolved that contract No. 59 will be again let if the work is not commenced within 8 days. It was decided to give the contractor for No. 58 notice that he has incurred a penalty for non-completion of work. It was decided to call tenders for formation of road at Orari in accordance with Mr Mason’s application in two Separate contracts. Mr Cqi'ra drew attention to the state of the’ road between the Brewery and the Temuka Bridge, and it was resolved that |ihe overseer get the footpath made passable for trafljc. KATE, Mr Fraser proposed, Mr Hpell seconded aqd it was carried-—“ That <* } oi 9/lOths of - _ general rate ■ _ penny on the rateable Tame of property in the district be struck at next meeting to be held on July 4th.” ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £194 Os sd, including contribution to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
