SOUTH RANGITATA DEBATING SOCIETY.

The opening meeting of the Rangitata South Young Men's Debating Society waß held on Monnay evening last, and was well attended. The president, Mr T. Taylor, occupied the chair. The first part of the programme consisted of an overture by Miss B. Taylor, recitations by Mr D. Watts and Master R. Kelly, violin selections by Messrs Cadwallader and Dorwood, and songs by Mr R. Irwin and Miss J. Taylor. This concluded, the debate of the evening "Is the Farmers' Co-opera,tive Store a benefit to the town of Timaru?" was proceeded with, Mr Irwin led the affirmative side, and named several ways in which the store had benefited the town. His opponent being unavoidably absent, Mr O'Neil volunteered to take up the negative side, and for some time subjected the benefits named to a very severe test. Other members then gave their opinions, and on the motion being put to the meeting it was fouud to be a tie, each securing the same number of votes. The secretary announced that at the next meeting there would be a mock Parliament, two candidates would address the meeting, one for the present Government and the other for the Opposition, after which there would be an election.
