WORKING MEN’S BREAD SUPPLY COMPANY.

About sixty persons put in an appearance at the Oddfellows’ Ba 1 1, Gen< d 4 *ie, on Satur' y evening, at the invitation of Mr D. Armishaw, to consider the advisab’Uty of forming a Working Men’s Bread Supply Company in Geraldine. Mr Armishaw explained that ho had called the meeting at the wish of several persons at Geraldine who pleged their word to be present at the meeting and conduct it, but ho was son/ to say that they had not turned up, and consequently he would have to trke the chair himself. Mr Armishaw then replied to questions as under ;

Would want £2 per week wages and a boy and horse and cart, and would keep the books himself.

To make the company pay would have to bake 195 loaves a day. This would cost about 16s per day for baking. Would want about £SO to start, or 100 shares at £1 per share; 10s paid down and 10s on application. Could get an oven at 7s 6d per week in good order. Would take six shares himself for a start. His loaves would weigh 4lb 6oz each.

Mr Hammond said that Geraldine was not large enough to form a Bread Supply Company, and if the Company could get a third of the custom they could not make it pay. He proposed “ That in the opinion of this meeting it is not advisable to start a Bread Supply Company.” Mr Herlihy seconded this motion. Mr J. Hay proposed, and Mr P. Herdman seconded an amendment u That this meeting is in favour of a Bread Supply Company being formed.” No hands were held up for the motion and 18 voted in favour of the amendment.

It was then proposed by Mr Hammond, and seconded by Mr Stonehouse—“ That those in favor of a Bread Supply Company form themselves into a committee to carry out arrangements.” This motion fel 1 through, and the meeting then broke up with a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, several persons expressing themselves that “ it was a mean trick to get the man to call a meeting at his own expense and then desert him at the last moment.”
