MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
ANNUAL RATEPAYERS MEETING.
The annual meeting of ratepayers was held in the boards office on Monday, May Ist. Seven ratepayers were present. Mr C. G. Tripp was in the chair. The minutes of former meeting were read and confirmed, after which the cha' ■- man laid a copy of the balance-sheet on the table. He then read the following repoit:— "To the Ratepayers of the Mount Peel Road District,
" Gentlemen, —In placing before you the balance-sheet for the year end ; ng 31st March, I must give you the following explanation : We began the year with a balance of £7038 15s 3d, made up as follows—General account, £6948 4s Id ; land fund account, £9O lis 2d. Our balance is now—General account, £6751 18s 8d; and land fund account owes general account £34 16s 6d; that is, we have spent £34 16a 6d (over and above the amount of thirds received) in making roads to perpetual lease Lections. Our receipts for the year were £1404 14s sd, made up as follows—Rate 5, £757 12s; subsidy on ratei, £250 ; tlr"ds, £77 10s ; interest on fixed deposits, £299 10s; various small sums, £23 2s sd. The expenditure has been as follows—Peel Forest district, £367 0s lOd; Raincliff, Sherwood Downs, and Clayton districts, £409 7s lOd; roads to perpetual lease sections, £2o<s 17s 8cl; misce'Janeous, £565 4s 8d (this includes £302 6s 6d paid Timaru B arbor Board, and £146 4s 8d paid to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board) ; salaries, £l5O. The expenditure in the Raincliff, Sherwood • owns, and Clayton Districts is subject to a reduction of £163 4s 9d, value of horse';, harness, dray, road metal, and pipes, now on hand (20 per cent, ha: been taken oft* cost price of everything but metal and pipes), this will bring the expenditure in this district down to £246 3s Id, and the roads are iu far better order than when taken over from the contractors. The uncollected rates on 31st March amounted to £lO5 7s 9d, but now, May Ist, they only amount to £3 lis 2d. Messrs R. Mackay and J. D. A eland retired by ballot. The only nomiuinations sent in were those of the Hon. J. B. A. Acland and Robert Mackay, consequently these gentlemen were declared elected. I trust, gentlemen, you are satisfied with this report and balance-sheet."
Mr Thew said the ratepayers should have a detailed balance-sheet laid before them, but this was not borne out by the rest of the ratepayers present, who said they were quite satisfied with the one now before them, seeing that the books could be inspected by any ratepayer who wished to have further details.
Here Mr Tripp asked permission 10 vacite the chair, as he had important business at home. This was granted, and Mr G. J. Dennistoun was voted to the chair.
Some further discussion then took place regarding Mr Thew's remarks, but as no motion was brought forward the matter dropped. Mr Wm. Smith drew attention to the necessity of clearing out the creek running through the township. A long discussion then took place with regard to the expenditure in the Raincliff district, but with no result, Mr Donald Maokay said he was quite satisfied with the work done by the board, an' was very pleased to see that the Hon. J. B. A. A eland was elected to the board, and chosen as chairman. He also said he was quite sure that all the roads in the district were a groat credit to them, but he thought the time was npar when the expenditure woukd require plose supervision; he felt quite sure that the whole of the ratepayers were quite satisfied with the work don p.
Mr D, Mackay proposed, Mr J. Rae seconded—"* That a hearty vote of thanks be tendered to the board for the way they had looked after the ratepayers' interests." —Carried unanimously. Mr D. Mackay proposed, Mr Newman seconded, and it was parried—--" That lunches be provided for the board as usual.'-
The chairman, in returning thanks for the honor they had done them, said they be quite sure a tight hand would be kept on the funds. The chairman proposed, Mr seconded, and it was carried- ,•■# That a vote of thanks be given to the clerk and overseer for the way he had carric d out tho works for the past year." He (the chairman), considered they had beou most foitunate in the' ■ choice when replacing Mr li /ine. Mr D. Mackay also spoke of ei\tir.e. confidence the iu the. clerk and overseer. ' The meeting then staged.,
