DISASTROUS HURRICANE.

Sydney - , March 27. News from Noumea confims the report of the disastrous nature of the late hurricane. Subscriptions are being raised in Noumea in aid of the sufferers. The warship Scorff has been despatched with supplies to the New Hebrides. Brisbane, March 20. The s.s. Croydon has arrived from New Hebrides. Dr Lamb, the well known missionary, boarded the vessel at Ambrym Island, at great personal risk, and informed the captain that as a result of the hurricane there was not a yam or banana to be obtained for love or money, and he did not know what the natives would do, for starvation was staring them in the face. News concerning the recent hurricane at the Islands has reached Auckland from Noumea, and shows that heavy losses have been caused. The New Hebrides Company and the Nickel Company have suffered severely, and many settlers have been ruined. The water reached ten feet high in the main thoroughfare at BonWall. The estimated loss by the hurricane is 4,000,000 francs.
