TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting of the above was held last night. Present— Messrs James Blyth (chairman), P. Coira, W. Storey, and J. W. Miles. CORKKSPONDISNCE. Correspondence was read as follows : From Native Land Laws Reform League, asking for an expression of opinion as to the advisability of a reform of the Native Land Laws affirming that a good deal 01 land might be made available lor settlement if the present Act could be amended, and asking support for resolution forwarded.

From Mr R. Darroch, applying- for permission to have pipes put across footpsth. —Granted. From compilers of Wises' Directory, asking for information as to rateable value, etc. From Mr AV. Badger, re account. Clerk to ask for explanation of same. QUEENSLAND FUND.

The chairman stated that a very warm response had been made to the appeal for assistance for the Queensland Sufferers. He had received about £96 in cash, 2A tons of flonr, and 70 sacks of wheat. Other lists were still to come in. NATIVE LAND FUND. It was resolved that this Board is of opinion that there is a great need for a reform of the Native Land Laws, and cordially agrees with the resolution forwarded. The resolution was as folio .vs :—" That this board is of opinion that there is urgent necessity, in the interests of both Natives and Europeans, for the enactment, during the next session of Parliament, of such a well considered and practically effective measure of reform of the Native Land Laws, and simplicity and economy of procedure in connection therewith, as will do away with the vexatious obstructions and delays, and great expenses in connection with the acquisition of Native land, which have so long hindered the prompt acquisition by the colony of such lands, and so very greatly retarded its progress." ELECTORAL. Mr P. Coira moved, and Mr J. W. Miles seconded—'• Tnat the clerk write to Mr A. E. G Rhodes, M.H.R., requesting him to endeavor to have Temuka made the head polling place of the new electoral district, and recommend Mr George Dyson as chief returning officer." —Carried. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer's report was to the following eifect:—" The wheel ruts on newly formed part of Main road had been filled in. Later on about 15 cubic yards of shingle would be required to make a permanent job. After insertion of notice re unpaid rates, the sum of about £4O was received, particulars of which were furnished. It would be necessary to arrange for the reappointment of a lamp lighter.' 1 Mr Storey moved—" That the overseeer procure 20 or 30 yards of shingle for repairs." seconded by Mr Miles and carried. THE LAMPLIGHTER. The chairman read out the terms upon which the lamp lighter was engaged viz 12 lamps at £4 per annum, and for 3 night lamps £ll extra, a total of £59, twenty-live per cent, of contract price to be retained until termination of contract. Some discussiou ensued as to the correctness of the above, the chairman stating that he was under the impression that the contractor should receive £5 per lamp for those kept burning all night. The clerk was instructed to look up original agreement upon the siibjtx-Ti. After consideration, on the motion of Mr Coira, seconded by Mr Miles, it was resolved appointed lamp lighter and that a fresh contract be entered into between himself and the board relative to his duties etc." RATES. It was decided that twelve persons be selected by lot to be sued for outstanding rates. accounts. Accounts amounting to £37 13s 7d were passed for payment and the meeting terminated. BOARD OF HEALTH. The board then resolved itself into a Board of Health. The overseer read a lengthy report upon the drainage of the town and the disposal of house slops.(special reference being made to the block fronting of the town board office. Where there were cultivated gardens the danger to health was not so great, but it was daily becoming more necessary for some system of drainage and water flushing. Some discussion ensued as to what best temporary arrangements might be made the flushing of drains and on the motion of Mr Storey, beconded by Mr Coira, it was decided "That the chairman interview the captain of the Fire Brigade with the view of obtaining the services of the brigade and engine to flush channels and drains." This concluded the business.
