TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

A meeting of directors of the Caledonian Society was held at the Wallingford Hotel on Monday evening. There was a representative attendance, the president, Mr A. M. Clark, occupying the chair. After formal business, the chairman said that an examination of the accounts showed that the society was again to be congratulated upon its progress. Its financial position was eminently sound, as was evinced by the fact that after paying all liabilities they had a credit balance of £lO, together with material valued at some £SO. He urged the members not to be content with this state of affairs, but to continue to put forth their utmost energies to secure additional members and to keep those already on their list. To the members the society owed, in a great measure, its strength. The objects of the society, he reminded them, were not merely to provide a day of national sport, but also to encourage a spirit of benevolence, and to promote literature and kindred arts. It was advisable to exercise a certain amount of foresight, for at any time the society might suffer certain reverses through bad weather, and so forth, but he had keen hopes that in a short time its position would bo unassailable and then its sphere of operations would be enlarged. He expressed regret that he had not been able to give such a large share of his attention to the society during the past few months as he would have wished, but he had watched the proceedings of the directors with interest and was pleased to see that they had evidently the objects of the society at heart. A letter was read from the secretary of Temuka District High School thanking the directors for a donation of two guineas to the prize fund. Mr W. Storey, secretary of the Temuka Mechanics Institute wrote asking for a donation towards the funds of the Institute!. Resolved—That the sum of two guineas be voted. Accounts in connection with the sports gathering and concert were passed for payment. Mr Dignan moved—“ That this society draw the attention of the Acclimatisation Society to the fact that several snakes were found in the Victoria Park, which had been left by a travelling showman, and ask them to communicate with the Government with the view of preventing sucn venonmous reptiles being allowed to enter the colony under any pretences whatever.”—Carried. THANKS. Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies and gentleman who assisted at the recent concert. RESIGNATION. The secretary, Mr G. H. Mogridge, tendered his resignation of his office, he being about to leave the district. The resignation was accepted with regret, the president and the directors speaking in eulogistic terms of the manner in which every detail of his duties had been carried out. On the motion of Mr Russell, seconded by Mr Dignan, it was decided to vote the secretary a bonus of £2O, as a small mark of the society’s appreciation of his services - ” Various matters of detail were attended to, aud the meeting terminated.
