ENGLAND AND EGYPT.
Cairo, Jan. 26. The decision to increase the British army is calming the excitement in Cairo, but there is still much excitement in the provinces, which is being fomented by the violent attacks of the native Press, which eulogise the Khedive’s attitude. The 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment (11th Foot), who were on their way home from India have been landed at Port Said, where they will remain until the arrival of the South Lancashire regiment from Malta, and the Ist Battalion of the Royal Highlanders (the Blaok Watch), from Gibraltar. The Riaz Ministry is working cordially with the British officials. The native press demand the removal of Lord Cromer. Jan. 28. A revolt against the rule of the Mahdi has broken out on the island of Abba in the White Nile. The Devonshire Regiment have arrived here. They met with a peaceful reception.
London, Jan. 26
A detachment of 250 of the South Wales Borderers (24th Foot), stationed at Aldershot, has been ordered to Alexandria.
The Triple Alliance supports England’s attitude in Egypt.
Paris, Jan. 26.
Peeling in Paris over the Egyptian question is quieting under the assurance that the Government will demand an explanation from Great Britain of her action in sending reinforcements to Egypt. Ihe Marquis of Dufferin has informed the French Government that the action of Britain in reinforcing the troops in Egypt does not imply a modification of the assurances given regarding the occupation of the country. M. Waddington has been instructed to ask Lord Rosebery to specify the incidents which have occasioned the reinforcements. Constantinople, Jan. 28. The French Government are communicating with the Porte relative to the British action in Egypt. Count Nelidoff, the Russian Ambassador is supporting the French authorities in their efforts to induce the Porte to request inter-state arbitration relative to Egypt.
