PEEL FOREST.

A rather high-clas3 concert for a country district was held in the Scotsburn School Room on Monday evening, in aid of the of the Peel Forest Anglican Church . Choir. Mr G. J. Dennistoun acted as chairman, and ths attendance could not haye b.e,an ' b.<?*tex. The programme opened with a pianoforte dii«» + played with taste h* ~" and B. Aclf> T,;i xviisses L. Following this came .. pretty vocal duet, " Maying," by Mrs Empson and Mr Besley. Miss Griffith, who sang exceedingly well, was vociferously encored for "Kathleen Mavourneen," and sang in response " Home, Sweet Home." Mr Harvey's song " Rose Marie," with guitar accompaniment, was a perfect gem, and secured him an encore. In return he sang " Way down upon the Swance River." Mr Besley also came in for an encore for his rendition of " Tom Bowling," and responded with " Sally in our Alley." In this song. Mr Besley distorted his features in such a ludicrous manner to suit the interpretation of the words that it could almost be felt that the apprentice boy himself was singing it. The duet, " Secret Voice," by Mrs Empson and Miss Griffith had to be repeated. After an interval of ten minutes, the second part was opened with a piano solo « Polish Dance " by Miss L. Acland. The trio, "May Queen, by Miss Griffith, and Messrs Harvey and Besley was decidedly good. Mrs Empson got a loud recall tor " We'd hotter bide a Wee,' and I sang "No Sir, No Sir." Mr Besley

for " An Eveni-'g Song " received another encore, and replied with a very comic song entitled " Kickilbury Brown," and for this he was again encored. Mr Harvey, for the comic song " The Railway Porter," was encored, and contributed another amusing song called " The Twins." A vocal duet in character, " Where are You Going to My Pretty Maid," was exceedingly well taken by Miss Griffith and Mr Besley. The audience was not satisfied till it was repeated. Mr Besley closed an excellent programme with a song in the Devonshire dialect.

Mr Dennistoun moved a vote of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who had assisted in the concert. They were delighted to see Mrs Empson once more amongst them, and also her sisters. They had, too, to thank the strangers, Messrs Besley and Harvey ; they had rendered very valuable help. Altogether the concert had realised £5 10s, and this sum would go to the funds of the church choir. The school committee had kindly lent the schoolroom free of charge. The proceedings closed with God Save the Queen.
