GENERAL BOOTH’S SCHEME.
London, Dec. 21
In their report the committee which was set up to enquire into General Booth’s “ Darkest England /f scheme doubt whether the course of training at Hadleigh would fit people for immigration ; that the bulk of the over-sea colony fund is invested in Queensland and Victorian stocks, bqt that two thirds are pledged as security for advances ; that there is nothing to show that Booth received benefit personally from the social sheme, and that he does not draw any money from either wing of the Army. The committee think it premature as yet to pronounce as to the results of the enterprise, and are sure that money has been spent prudently and that the accounts are kept in a clear, business-like manner. Although the General is liable both civilly and Crimin - ally, yet he has adequate legal Safeguards in real property investment. The committee are of opinion that stocks ought to be invested independent of trustees. The press admit that the report clears Booth personally, but they stUl doubt the practical character of the scheme. The Ball AfaU Gazette says that the yopo r t of the committee presided over by Bord Onslow whitewashes General Booth in regard to the charges which were made against him in connection with the Salvation Army social scheme, but regrets the amount of cash which was sunk in buildings at the beginning of operations.
