London, December 1. At the wool sales the competition is a little less brisk. A parcel from New South Wales brought 9^d. Butter, ex Cuzco, from Australia, arrived in good condition. Best dairy realised 102 s per cwt, and best factory 1225. The prevailing close warm weather has had a depressing effect on the prices. Many quarters of beef by the Otarama, although of bright appearance externally, were found to be quite putrid near the bone. The wool market is spirited and very firm. New South "Wales consignments are fetching B|d to 10|d. The demand is made that credit in the drapery trade shall be reduced to four months, and that Australian bills shall have sixty days currency. Senator Bland declares that Rothschild's scheme will virtually render useless £80,000,000 worth of money now in circulation, the reckoning of which will involve a loss of £20,000,000. Decembe 2. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 105^; 3£ per cent, ditto, 97f. Business in New Zealand longberried wheat ex warehouse is restricted at 32s 3d. Canterbury frozen mutton, 4|d per lb; Wellington, 3|d. Beef, fore-quarters, 3|d; hindquarters, 3§d. New Zealand hemp is steady but inactive. Good to fair quality, £25 10s per ton. South Australian wheat, ex warehouse, is quiet at 33s 9d; Victorian, ex warehouse, is also quiet at 335. Australian cargoes of new crop of early shipment are offering at 32s 6d. Buyers offer 6d lesss. Australian off coast cargoes are quoted at 32s 9d. December 3. The Hon. A Gardner, President of the Board of Agriculture, in replying to a deputation representing dairy interests, promised to enforce the Margarine Act. There is a large supply of frozen meat on hand with poor demand. Only a few carcases of the Melbourne shipment ex Massilia. have been sold. The Sydney consignment realised 2|d per lb. At the wool sales a large selection of heavy inferior Queensland wools was offered, and a weak price obtained, occasional buyers offering from 6|d per lb to For other wools there was spirited competition, but prices were unaltered. The Aorangi's skim-milk cheese was maloderous and realised about 21s per cwt. Bkusskls, Dec. 3. The committee appointed by the Monetary Conferpnce to inquire into Baron ltothscliild's scheme for the purchase of silver have rejected the proposal by 7 to 6, but favor the chairman's proposal for the gradual withdrawal of gold, coins 9ftaK value, than
francs, and small bank notes. The United States representative informed the Conference that President Harrison's Government were considering the question of the repeal of the Silver Purchase Bill. If the Conference should separate without coming to any result it is not likely that America will purchase 54,000,0000z5. It is generally believed that no good results will be obtained from the Conference. Melbourne, Dec. 2. In the leading departments of business the recovery of trade was general throughout November, but there is a shrinkage compared with the same month last year. Hobakt, Dec. 2. The Legislative Assembly has sanctioned an increase of the proposed loan from £1,500,000 to £2,100,000. It is expected to be placed on the market early in the new year, probably below par.
