CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS.
At the Addington yards on Wednesday there were fair entries of stock. Store Sheep The sale of store sheep was limited in extent, but the prices obtained sufficed to show that there exists a strong demand for good sorts of young crossbreds and for ewes with a fair percentage of cross'ored lambs. Merino ewes and lambs sold at 13s 9d, and some really prime quality four-tooth shorn ewes, with 120 per cent of lambs, brought 22s the pair. Dry young crossbreds sold at from lis to 13s, and a few merino wethers brought Ss 7d in the wool.
Fat Lambs—The sale of fat lambs was enlivened by the presence of a buyer for export, best lambs selling at from 12s to 14s 3d, and second quality at from 8s 6d. Fat Sheep—The sale of fat sheep was very limited in extent, there not being any more than there were last week, and prices advanced. Best wethers and maiden ewes, shorn and suitable for export, ranged from 14s to 16s 2d, at which price some very nice English Leicester cross sheep were disposed of, and a line of sheep from South Canterbury (in the wool), brought 20s od, this class of sheep yielding, shorn, 2|d to 2|d per lb, net freezing weight; and in the wool from to 3§d per lb, all counted. There were some very heavy dry ewes, for which a good demand existed, from 13s to 17s being the range of prices given, being at the rate of 2fd to 3£d per lb, all counted. Comparatively few merinos were offered, but many of these realised from 12s 6d to 13s, and others sold at from lis upwards. There was not sufficient to supply all requirements. Fat Cattle There was a fairly large entry of good quality, and owing to the short supply of sheep the trade made the sale of good beef more active. For best steers and heifers; which realised from £6 10s to £8 10s, the average price given was 21s per 1001 b, while a number of prime cows sold at from 18s to 19s 6d per 1001 b. Store Cattle —There was very little to select from in the store cattle section, and prices showed a renewed advance. Yearlings, at from 35s to 465, were eagerly snapped up; some eighteen-month to two-year-old steers brought up to £3 8s 6d : two to three-year-old heifers, most of the latter age being fit for the fat pens, brought from £3 to £5 15s; and the few cows yarded sold at from £2 19s to £4 ss. Only a few dairy cows were offered, and sold freely at rates proportionate to their quality. Pigs—The baconers being all farm fed commanded 3|d per pound, and the best class of porkers sold freely at 4d, while stores, choppers, and other descriptions met with a ready sale. December 1. A bountiful wheat harvest is expected. An opinion is hazarded that New South Wales will this year be able to supply her own wants, while another opinion is that, even if the forecasts are realised, she will still require to import a small quantity. There has been an exceedingly buoyant tone in the wool market during the week, and strong competition has forced prices another fraction. 31,800 bales have been offered, of which 31.058 bales have been sold. The following are the current prices : —Greasy fleece, medium, 6|d to 7^d; good, 7-f dto Sf d ; superior, 9d to lid ; lambs, superior, Sd to 9^d; crossbreds, medium, 7d to 7|-d ; good, 8d to 8f d ; superior, 9d to 9f d ; scoured, medium, ll±d to Is O^d; good, is id to is superior, Is 3d to Is 5d ; washed, medium, 9d to 9^d; superior, lid to Is o^d. Melbourne, Nov. 30. Wheat, 3s 6d. Buyers are shy and lower prices seem inevitable. Flour is dull in sympathy with wheat. Nominal prices are—stone-makes, £7 10s to £8; roller-brands, £9. Oats, Algerian, rather scarce at Is lOd to 2s ; for fair to prime feeding, Is lid ; Danish, 2s. Maize is arriving sparingly, 3s to 3s id. Cheese, New Zealand, factory-made, sd. Butter ranges from lid for prime sorts downwards. Flax has a small inquiry, and it is difficult to get New Zealand equivalents, owing to cutting amongst manufacturers. Good to prime quality is worth £2O to £22 per ton. Keports of the wheat crops are most encouraging, and the yield will probably be the largest the colony ever produced. December 1.
