THE GOVERNOR IN SOUTH CANTERBURY.

WAIM ATE. His Excellency the Governor, Lady Glasgow, and suite, arrived at Wairnate on Monday at 4.35 p.m., by special train. On the arrival of the train at the station the band played the National Anthem, His Excellency was then presented with the following address (signed by the Mayor and Councillors), which was read by the Town Clerk : —- “ Wairnate, 14th Nov., 1892. To His Excellency the Earl of Glasgow, Governor of New Zealand. May it please Your Excellency,—We, the Mayor and Councillors of Wairnate, beg leave to convey the hearty welcome of the inhabitants of Wairnate to Your Excellency and Lady Glasgow, on the occasion of Your Excellency’s first visit to Wairnate. It is all the more gratifying to us, from the fact that this is the first time in which the borough has been honored with a visit from a Governor of New Zealand. Wo take this opportunity of expressing our loyalty to, and respect for, Your Excellency as representative of Queen Victoria; and our sincere desire for the peace and prosperity of the great Empire over which she has long reigned, and for the welfare of this colony, of which you are Her Majesty’s representative. We hope the term of Your Excellency’s Governorship of New Zealand may be one of progress to the people of the colony over which you preside, and also M> tom of proof oiity and happiness to

Your Excellency, Lady Glasgow, and family. Again asking Your Excellency and Lady Glasgow to accept our hearty and loyal welcome to Waimate, —We are, Your Excellency’s obedient servants.” His Excellency, in responding, said that it was the first country town he had visited in the colony, and that his visit was chiefly on account of his friends, who were resident in the district. It was where his cousin had found a wife, and he was therefore proud to come to Waimate. Major Steward called for three cheers for his Excellency and Lady Glasgow, which were heartily given. His Excellency and Lady Glasgow then left for the Waimate Station, where they were the guests of Mrs Studholme during their stay. TIMARU. The Governor arrived in Timaru a few minutes before 1 o’clock yesterday. He was accompanied by Lady Glasgow and suite, and the Hon. Major Steward, Speaker of the House of Representatives and M.H.R. for Waimate. On arrival at the station by special train he was met by Mr Hall-Jones, M.H.R, for the district, who introduced him to His Worship the Mayor, and members of the Borough Council. The following address of welcome was read by the Town Clerk, Mr E. H, Lough : “To the Right Honorable David Earl of Glasgow, Knight Grand Cross of the most distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, Governor of New Zealand. May it please Your Excellency, We, the Mayor, Councillors, and Burgesses of the Borough of Timaru, desire to welcome you and your highly-esteemed Lady, the Countess of Glasgow, on this your first visit to our seaport town. As the representative of our sovereign Lady, Queen Victoria, wo assure you of our continued loyalty. We regret that the short time at your disposal prevents your visiting our public institutions, harbor works, and our several local industries, and that you are unable, therefore, to judge of the efforts made to promote the interests of the town and district; also that you are unable to visit the magnificent agricultural lands surrounding our town, and to observe the untiring energy and persevering industry of our fellowsettlers. We hope that health and happiness may ever attend Your Excellency and Lady Glasgow, and that we may shortly be privileged again to welcome you to our town and district, and that on the occasion of your next visit you may have more time at your disposal. Again desiring to accord to Your Excellency and Lady Glasgow a most hearty welcome, we are, your most obedient servants.” His Excellency replied, stating that he was sorry time did not permit him to stay longer in their midst. He congratulated them on having such a fine harbor, and said that, so far as he could judge by looking from the train as it passed, there was no better land in New Zealand than in the neighborhood of Timaru. The party then entered carriages, which were in waiting, His Worship the Mayor driving in the same carriage with the Governor, the Countess of Glagow, and Mr N. C. Orbell, On arrival at the hospital an interesting incident occurred. While going through the wards one of, the inmates, named Rogers, recognised the Governor. Rogers had been a shepherd ©n Lord Glasgow’s estate in the Old Country, and, the Governor becoming aware of this, both he and the Countess went to see the man at once, and had some conversation, and it is very probable it will result to Rogers’ advantage. He will in all probability be transferred to the Old Men’s Home. After having inspected the hospital, the party were driven all round the back of ■' the town and down the Wai-iti road to the railway station, where they arrived just as the midday train arrived from the north. The Vice-Regal party then entered their carriage and left immediately for Christchurch, amidst the cheers of a large concourse of people, who had assem blee at the station.
