THE RUSSIAN CAVALRY.
In the Journal des Sciences Militaries, a writer on the " Remounts of European Armies" says: "No cavalry in Europe can rival that of Russia from a numerical point of view, because the country is rich in the possession of 20,000,000 horses. It is not without reason that Russia has always regarded her cavalry as one of the most valuable elements of her military power. At present, in peace time, she can place in the field more than 600 squadrons, of which the effective is 107,883 horses, and 104,000 men—natural horsemen, as the natives of this country are." The writer goes on to explain that if Siberia be included in the calculation, the number of horses in the possession of Russia is 25,000,000, Allowing for the liveliness of French imagination, we _ are still compelled to admit that this is a wonderful array of cavalry, but the idea of their men being all born horsemen may be at once dismissed. There are many and large tribes, it is true, who may be said to live on horseback, but they do not form the bulk of the regular cavalry ; and the average horses are small, and not up to much weight.
