AUSTRALIAN CABLE.

Melbourne, Oct. 25. In an action for wages to-day, Snowy's clerk swore that 4000 tickets were issued on the Caufield Cup totalisator, over 50 being added after the race had been run. Sydney, Oct. 25.

A fire occurred to-night in Gardener's warehouse, in Clarence street, and the basement was burnt out before the flames could be extinguished. Extensive damage was caused to the contents of the store by smoke and water. The stock was insured for £150,000, and the building for £45,000, the policies being scattered over thirty offices, including the South British office, which has a risk of £6OOO, and the New Zealand office one of £4OOO. The extent of the damage has not been ascertained. Adelaide, Oct. 25. In the Legislative Assembly to-day, the Premier enunciated the policy of the Government. He said that, while not wishing to be pessimistic in regard to the state of the colony, it would be stupid to be optimistic. The Government expected a deficit of £216,000 on railways, and £400,000 on Customs, but by means of rigorous retrenchment and increasing the income tax by half for a year, with the credit balance from last year, they hoped to be able to show a surplus of £37,000. Brisbane, Oct. 24. The Chief Justice, Sir Charles Lilley, has resigned, owing to ill-health. Moncado, the Thursday Island murderer, and Gleeson, the Prince of Wales Island murderer, were executed together. In the case of the former death was instantaneous, but Gleeson's body showed considerable muscular contraction after the drop.
