S.C. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Tuesday. Present— Messrs J. Jackson (chairman), Moore, 'Talbot, Sherratt, and Graham. Aiter routine business, the steward submitted a return giving the namek of ten patients who had been in the hospital for terms ranging from 68 days up to 331 days, or an average of 154 days. Three had been discharged since the return was made up, leaving seven patients who had exceeded (and were still resident in the hospital) the time specified in by-law 53.—An animated conversational discussion took place on this matter as to what was best to be done by the board in the circumstances. Advantage was also taken of the presence of Drs Hogg and Reid later on to get particulars of some of the cases. —After consideration it was decided to make some arrangements whereby one of the patients could go to the barracks (the medical men could do no more for the patient), and to let the others stand over for future consideration. Mr Moore, in accordance with a request from last meeting, brought up particulars of cost of an ice-making plant. He had estimates and particulars from a Home firm, and the machine graded as size 3 was recommended as the best for Timaru, the cost of which was £2O. —After brief consideration of the matter, the secretary was requested to write to Dr Macgregor on the subject. Drs Hogg and Reid waited on the board to ask that a shelter shed be built at the hospital for horses and traps. — Action postponed till annual estimates are before the board. Charitable aid business was taken next. The board acknowledged, with thanks, the sum of £2 14s 6ci, the balance in hand from the last ploughing-match at Rangitata. Cases of aid required, reported by Mr Gaze, Mr Talbot, Mv Moore, and Mr Graham, were taken; mid Mr Moore reported at length on a particular case in his district. In dealing with this case a suggestion by Mr Moore was approved. In agreements for boarding out children the board can only interfere in cases of neglect. In the amendment proposed the board are to have the power to remove a child from the foster parents, should its own parents at any time be in a position to maintain it themselves. Accounts amounting to £135 Gs 4d on hospital account and £129 5s 5d on charitable aid account were passed for payment, leaving the funds of the board in credit £450 Gs 7d.
