GERALDINE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Geraldine School Committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Present —Messrs W. H. Walton (chairman), L. Newport, C. B. Sherratt, T. Bowkett, J. Boughton, J. D. Gore, and T. Sherratt. HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The head master reported as follows : “ The average attendance for last quarter was 182, as against 192 for the previous quarter, and 212 for the first quarter of the year. Thus, although our average attendance for the year is considerably above the 185 required by the scale — being 195—still the salaries of all the staff will be reduced during the present quarter, as well as the allowance for incidentals to the committee. The fall in the attendance last quarter was due, as the committee is aware, to the great deal of sickness in the district, as well to the prevalent bad weather. The average attendance for the present quarter is: Boys, 102; girl, 106 ; total, 208. Highest attendance, 219; weekly roll, 257. I have received some physics apparatus from the Education Office since last meeting. The desks, forms, and cupboards have also been received. We still require seven dozen ink-wells ; also pens and foolscap. “ T. Chevne Farnie, “ Head Master.” It was resolved that application be made to the Board of Education for seven dozen ink-wells, and that the head master be required to collect the fees for nibs. It was decided that the chairman and secretary draft a letter to the Board of Education assigning reasons for average attendance being reduced, and requesting no interference with the present staff. SCHOOL FURNITURE, ETC. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Education Board asking for an estimated value of school buildings and apparatus. The chairman explained that he and the secretary had made the necessary return, caretaker’s salary. It was resolved that the caretaker be paid on November Ist his monthly salary out of the prize fund. " GORSE-GRUBBING. It was left in the hands of the chairman and visiting committee to have the gorse at the school-grounds grubbed. VISITORS. The visitors reported everything, except the attendance, working satisfactorily at the school. Messrs C. B. Sherratt and L. Newport were appointed as visitors for the ensuing month. Sundry accounts were pasaed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
