Charles Leaky, of Toronto, murdered his hither, mother, and sister, and burned the house down. The murderer has been captured. Mereier was commited for trial on three charges of malfeasance. Oct. 12. A lieutenant of Toronto Volunteers, named Macdonald, recently lectured in favour of annexation to the United States. The Minister of Militia regarded this action as treason, and removed Macdonald from his position. Mr Smith, the American Consul at Quebec, in his official report to his Government, described the French Canadians as “ unclean, and believing in the holiness of dirt.” In revenge the French smashed the windows of his residence. Blackmore, county council clerk at Paddington, has been arrested on a charge of embezzlement. His defalcations amount to £3OO. Oct. 13. On the introduction of the Local Option Bill the amendment to the effect that the Bill should provide for compensation was carried by 47 to 23. In the Legislative Assembly, Sir Henry Parkes has given notice of motion to the effect that the existence of a nominated Upper House is an insuperable obstacle to the federation of the colonics, and should be abolished or re-eatablishod on a popular basis,

The evidence for the prosecution in the charge against the directors of the Australian Banking Company for conspiring together to issue a fraudulent balance-sheet has finished. Several of the defendants addressed the Court, and blamed Malcolm for enticing them into the concern. The Government were defeated by 25 to 21 on Sir J. W. Downer’s “ Want of Confidence” motion. The most exciting feature of the debate was a violent attack made by the AttorneyGeneral on the Hon. C. C. Kingston, whom he accused of going to Broken Hill for the purpose of inciting men to do wrong. The Speaker compelled a withdrawal of the statement. The Premier, Mr W. F. Holder, has resigned and Sir J. W. Downer has undertaken to form a ministry. Brisbane, Oct. 12. The Full Court has delivered judgment in the case Queensland Investment Company v. Sir Thomas Mcllwraith and others. The Bench held that the Chief Justice had no right to set aside the finding of the jury, and deliver judgment himself. The Court therefore found for the defendants on all points. Perth, Oct, 12, Reports are in circulation that a valuable discovery of coal and petroleum has been made at a point between Albany and Port Augusta. Samples taken to Albany are pronounced to be excellent. An exploring party has left for Deep Creek.
