GERALDINE TOWN BOARD
The first meeting of the newly-elected Geraldine Town Board was held on Tuesday evening. Present —Messrs A. White, W. S. Maslin, J. Williams, R. Taylor, R. Hammond, J. M. Sutherland, and R. Y. Fergusson. ELECTION OP CHAIRMAN. Mr Taylor moved, and Mr Williams seconded—“ That Mr A. White be chairman of the board for the ensuing term.” Mr Hammond proposed, and Mr Sutherland seconded—“ That Mr W. S. Maslin be elected chairman of the board.” On votes being taken three were in favor of Mr White and two in favor of Mr Maslin. Mr White was therefore elected. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows :—■ From Mr A. B. G. Rhodes, M.H.R., stating that he would do Ins utmost to prevent the Government passing any measure abolishing subsidies to local bodies. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, re “ thirds ” and “ fourths ” payable on sections.—lt was resolved that a copy of the by-law referring to the erection of shanties on perpetual-lease sections be sent to the Commissioner. _ From Mr T. H. Stocker, Orari, asking to have his name substituted for Mr M. O’Halloran’s on the Rate Roll for Sections 37 and 38, Geraldine township.— Granted.
From the Town Clerk, Hawera, asking the board to form a sub-committee to canvass for funds towards a national lasting memorial of the late Sir H. A. Atkinson.—lt was agreed that the chairman and any member be authorised to collect money for this purpose. From Mr C. E. Sherratt, requesting an increase of salary as clerk to the board, and pointing out that the Temuka and Arowhenua boards pay their clerks one half more than the Geraldine board.— Mr Maslin moved, Mr Williams seconded, and it was carried—“ That the sum of £3O per annum be paid the clerk for his services.
From Mr J. W. Pye, stating that he was prepared to complete the asphalt pavement in front of his new premises, 2 chains by 5 h feet, providing the board would pay one half the cost. He also asked that the old culvert be shifted further down, and that the crossing in front of his shop be shingled.—lt was agreed that the culvert be shifted, and that permission to complete the asphalt at his own cost be given to Mr Pye, the work to be done to the srtisfaction of tha board.
From Mr R. Pratt, asking the board to have something done to remove water from the front of his gate, and that the road be shinged.—The Works Committee to reprrt on the matter. From Mr W. H. Walton, captain of the Geraldine Fire Brigade, requesting a grant of £3 or £4, for the purpose of having the fire engine repaired and painted.—Resolved —“ That the sum of £3 be granted to the brigade, provided the work is carried out as agreed by the brigade.” From Mr M. Burridge, asking for a crossing to Section 121, Geraldine Town District.—Granted.
From Mr E. O’Brien, applying to have a road f ,rmea from Mr T. Bowkett’s house to the writer’s house; also reminding the board that it was high time the horse cemetery was closed. —The Works Committee to report on. these matters at next meeting. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Chairman and Messrs Hammond, Williams, and Sutherland, were elected as a Works Committee for the new terra. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Chairman, Messrs Taylor, Maslin, and Fergusson wore elected a Finance Committee. REPORTS. The ranger’s report on stray cattle, and the overseer’s report on work done, were read, and considered satisfactory. ROAD REPAIRS. The Works Committee were empowered to call for tenders for shingling the roads where required, RATES. Mr Taylor proposed, Mr Maslin seconded, and it was carried—“ That the clerk prepare a rate book, based upon a rate of Jd in the £, for the year ending March 31st, 1893, payable in one sura on the sth day of November, 1892.” FINANCIAL. It was decided that a statement of all moneys received during the month, not for rates, be laid on the table of tho board at every meeting. FIXED DEPOSIT, It was agreed that the £l5O fixed.,dp* posit maturing on October Bth be placed to the board’s current account, WORKS. The overseer was instructed to put tt hand-rail to the plank over the oreek in North Terrace street, near Mr Dickens’ house. PLEASANT VALLEY ROAD BRIDGE. Mr Maslin moved, and Mr Taylor seconded—“ That Mr C. E. Sherratt be asked to prepare plans and specifications for the erection of a stone bridge, and also for a concrete bridge over the Pleasant Valley Road Creek, and that the Works Committee go with him and point out width of span. Mr Sherratt to be paid the usual.”—Carried. THE WATER RACE. Tha work’s committee were instructed to inspect the water race and see if the water, which at present terminates in the riverbed after leaving the park, cannot be brought to the necessary level to run it through the lower part of the town. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £l6 18s 7d. were passed for payment. The Board then rose.
