AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD
The regular monthly meeting of the above board was held last night. Present Messrs J. Ash well (chairman), A. Frew, E. Brown, E. Carr, and A. Russell. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows : From the Auditor-General, covering balance-sheet duly certified. From the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, asking the board's support to a resolution affirming the undesirability of doing away with the subsidies to local bodies. The board signified its approval of the resolution. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating that the sum of £4O 14s Gd had been paid to the Receiver of Land Revenue in respect of " thirds " accrued as per memo. From the Receiver of Land Revenue advising that he had lodged to the credit* of the board voucher for the payment of £4O 14s 6d in respect of thirds accrued. From the Property Tax Department, advising payment to the credit of the board of £9 10s Id, subsidy due for the years 1891 and 1892 under Local Bodies Powers and Finance Act. From the Tiniaru Harbor Board and Geraldine County Council to the effect that the Harbor Board had found it necessary to make a levy in one amount owing to the unavoidable delay in ascertaining the valuation within the harbor district, and that the amount due by the Arowhenua Town District was £l7, payment of which to the credit of the board at the Bank of New Zealand was requested.—Passed for payment. From the Commmissioner of Crown Lands, stating that lands upon which gorse was spreading would be inspected with a view to offering it for lease and getting the nuisance abated. From Mr P. McCaskill, asking Ihat his name may be removed from the roll in respect of sections 90 and 91, Arowhenua, and that of Mr Sim subsituted. —Agreed to. From the Lands Department, stating that the Commissioner was now prepared to recommend the reservation of certain lands about the creek, subject to road frontages being conserved, and asking the board's approval of his suggestions. A map showing the proposed reservations accompanied the letter. The position of the board was discussed in respect of the proposed reserve, and Mr Russell moved —" That the overseer write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands drawing his attention to the fact that some of the roads proposed to be reserved are of no utility, but that the board ai*e prepared to accept his recommendatoins in respect of the other allotments as marked on the plan. overseer's report. The overseer reported verbally as to roads, and at the suggestion of Mr Russell he was authorised to have some shingling done at the cutting near Mr Manning's allotment. financial. Mr Russel moved, and Mr Frew seconded —■" That the sum of £SO be re-deposited with the Bank of New Zealand at fixed deposit for 12 months." — Carried. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £34 10s 4d were passed for payment. VOTES OF THANKS. Mr Russell moved, in very complimentary terms, a cordial vote of thanks to the chairman. He had been indefatigable in attendance to his duties, and the board was indebted to him for his services. Mr Brown, in seconding the motion, endorsed Mr Russell's remarks. The clerk put the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr Ashwell responded suitably. Mr Carr moved, Mr Frew seconded, and it was carried —" That the board express its approval of the manner in which the overseer had carried out his duties." The meeting then terminated.
