SOUTH CANTERBURY HARRIERS
Point-to-Point Steeplechase.
The annual Point-to-Point Steeplechase of the above Hunt Club took place on Tuesday last, at Winchester. The time appointed for starting was 2 o'clock, and long before that hour Winchester presented an unusually lively appearance. Mr King brought out a large party from Timaru in his four-horse drag, while the occupants of several other vehicles from the same place helped to swell the crowd. A start was made shortly after 2.30 in Mr J. Paterson's home paddock. Thence the course was through Mr A. L. Barke?''s property for about two miles, then across the railway line into Messrs Cripps', Brown's, and Scott's, and after racing through the paddocks behind Messrs Lougley's, and Kennedy's, across the road into Mr Inwood's mill paddock, at the south end of which were the flags denoting the winning post. The following are details of the racing : Mr B. R. Macdonald's b g Muckross, aged (Owner) 1 Mr P. Waiting's b g Rodney, aged (Mr A. G. Cox) 2 Mr M. Gray's br g Pembroke, aged (Mr H. Wynn-Williams) 3 Miss Button's ch g Kahikatea, aged (Mr A. G. Macdonald) 0 Mr G. Shaw's ch g Pastime, aged (Owner) 0 Mr G. Wood's ch g Juggler, aged (Owner) 0 Mr C. Wynn-Williams' ch g Mount Cook, aged (Owner) 0 Mr B. R. Macdonald's b g Demon, aged ... (Mr Postlethwaite) 0 Muckross and Rodney led over the first fence, but the latter was immediately pulled back, while Muckross weut on in front over the next two fences, followed by Juggler and Mount Cook. The last named was the one in front through Mr A. L. Barker's home paddocks and led out on to the road, where all the horses baulked except Juggler, Pembroke, Rodney, and Demon. Through the ridge paddock the pace improved, and three timber jumps were negotiated by all without' a mistako. The leaders lost some ground after jumping into the railway line, and the field took close order as the turn was made for home. Juggler came to grief jumping out of the line the second time, while Pastime followed suit at the next fence. This left but Cook, Rodney, Muckross, and Pembroke in front, and this order was maintained to the last fence, where Mount Cook, who looked all over a winner, fell, and after a good finish between Muckross and Rodney the former secured the verdict by a length, with Pembroke third, three lengths away, while there followed Kahikatea and Mount Cook in order.
