FATAL SHIPWRECK.

The barque Newfield, 1275 tons, bound from Sharpness to Brisbane with a cargo of salt, ran ashore during rough weather on Sunday near the Cardes river, on the Victorian coast. In a few minutes after she struck five and a half feet of water were reported in the hold. Captain G. Scott and 25 men then attempted to land, but one boat was dashed to pieces along side the wreck, while the other was swamped. The captain and eight men were drowned, and nine reached shore safely. Afterwards the other eight men got ashore safely. Several bodies were recovered. The catastrophe occurred through the captain mistaking Nelson's light for King's Island. Several acts ofbravery are recorded in the work of rescue. It is understood that the cargo is insured in the NewZealand office.
