SUCCESSFUUL EXPERIMENTS IN POTATO GROWING.
(Home News.) Some remarkable results have just been obtained in the neighborhood of Nantes (a Consular report says) by a goiitj.oipai} farmer, also a distinguished chemical engineer, who had been for some time past engaged on experiments iu potato grooving. He has succeeded in getting the enormous return of 42 tons per acre, without using ,o,ny of the improved or expensive varieties, The point of capital importance is the selection of the seed. The ground must be ploughed yory deeply, and should be well manured. Before planting the seed potatoes they are steeped in ,a bath composed of sulphate of ammonia and nitrate of potash, of each 61b to 25 gallons of wotcr. They should then, after taking them .out of this solution, be allowed to stand for 24 huuvs before planting, so that the germs will have time to swell; and it is to the increased activity of germination produced by This bath that he attributes the enormous return he h/is been able to obtain. Very good results have been got from treating grain seed (especially wheat) in the same way, except' that for corn there should' be added to the bath 2 Jib .of .sulphate of copper.
