THE HOME ELECTIONS.
London, July 21. The Chronicle urges that Lord Carrington ought to succeed Lord Knutsford in the Colonial office, and not be sent to Ireland, and considers that Mr Gladstone’s majority is enough to enable the Liberals to do a great deal of work. The supporters of Home Rule polled 300,000 votes against 78,000 in Ireland. A council of eight will assist Mr McCarthy in directing the policy of the Nationalists. Mr O’Connor, in addressing a meeting, said that many Liberal candidates had been defeated by the influence of the publicans. This election bad produced the greatest corruption that had ever been seen for thirty years. ' July 22. Sir Charles Dilke is in favour of granting autonomy to Wales and Scotland as well as Ireland. Sir William Vernon Harcourt will lead the House of Commons. Sir. W. V. Harcourt is consulting the Radicals as to the advisability of demanding that the House of Lords shall not be permitted to force a dissolution over the Horae Rule amendment which will be moved to the Address-in-Reply to the House of Commons with a view to showing that the country will not trust Lord Salisbury. The Times gives the total Home Rule vote as follows :—2,477,856 ; Anti-Home Rule, 2,274,842. The majority for the latter in England was 121,635; the Home Rule majority in Wales was 51,686 ; in Scotland, 36,185, and in Ireland 286,828 ; the total majority in favor of Home Rule being 203,014.
