COLORED LABOR.
Sydney, July 1. The Presbyterian Hebridean Mission Synod, consisting of seventeen European missionaries, have met and decided to forward a protest to Lord Knntsford against the resumption of the Kanaka labour traffic on the grinds that’ while not disputing tho contention that cheap labour "is a” necessity for the sugar industry of Queensland, the knowledge within the possession of the synod loads it to affirm that the traffic cannot be carried on with justice to, the natives or honour to the British nation ; that, despite the pledges as to tin; regulations, etc., given by Queensland, tho absence of a civilised government to protect the interests of tho natives makes recruiting without abuse an impossibility : that the deportation of young able-bodied natives prevents the development of industry, Iff n tiers the advancement of civilisation, of Christianity, and is a powerful factor of depopulation of the islands : that tho practice of making largo presents to tho natives recruiting is universally regarded by them aa a purchase in money, and that the traffic in human beings is haying a demoralising effect,
LABOUR, ETC. London, Juno 30. Employers in the boot trade have ordered a general lock-out, owing to the trade union not stopping a strike at Northampton. It is believed ninety thousand men will be thrown out of employment. July 2. The bootmakers have decided to submit their dispute to arbitration. Sydney', July I. Disintegration of the Trades Council still proceeds. The latest withdrawal from the Council is the Yanmen’s Union. July 2. A strike of Broken Hill miners is imminent, owing to the mine owners insisting on the right to stope ore by contract. Hobart, July 2. The miners of the King, Junction, Queen, and Western Mines, Zeehan, have struck against a reduction in wages.
