TEA AND ENTERTAINMENT AT RANGITIRA.

On Friday evening last, the annual soiree given in connection with the Rangitira Sabbath School, came off in the school. The room was gaily decorated by a bevy of young ladies. Tables were placed the full length of the room, and were groaning under the weight of appetizing viands. The tables were presided over byMesdames J. Talbot, J. Wright, Wm, Lyon, aud Norton, and Misses Ackroyd and McCullough. At 6.30 p.m., when the Temuka contingent, numbering over 20, under the leadership of Mr I. Smith, had arrived, an attack was made on the delicacies. Fully 100 young and old sat down to tea, and then ensued a busy half-hour of bustle. After all had been satisfied, the room was cleared, and about 8 p.m. a concert was commenced under the chairmanship of the Rev. Mr Dickson, of Temuka. The chairman made a few opening remarks, congratulating the people of the district on the excellent school they had,and the increased accommodation and attendance, and expressed his pleasure, that under the care and attention of the head master, Mr Jas. Gillespie, everything was working well. He congratulated the Sunday School teachers, especially their worthy superintendent, Mr Norton. He urged all to be good ar.d temperate, and advocated the establishment of a local Band of Hope. A varied programme of dialogues, recitations, and songs, was then gone through by the members of the Temuka Presbyterian Band of Hope, under the very able control of Miss Goodey, who also officiated at the piano, kindly lent by Mr J. Talbot, The performance was quite a treat, and the manner in which the young children acquitted themselves spoke volumes for the care and persevering attention bestowed on them by Miss Goodey. The following contributed items, all of which were loudly applauded : Misses Emma Cooper, Jennie Fenton, Rhoda Goodey, Eva Goodey, Annie Nicholas, Ruth Goodey, Taylor and Goodey (duet), also Masters Duncan, Moynahan, and Ardell. The proceedings were closed by singing a hymn, and by the Doxology. .Mr Norton proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies who had presided at the tables, to the members of the Band of Hope, to Mr J. Talbot for his piano, and in a word to all for their kind attendance. To this Miss Goodey responded. At the close of the meeting five persons came forward and signed the pledge. On the whole the gathering must be regarded as being eminently successful. A handsome addition should now accrue to tjie Sunday School funds. The catering by Mr McCaskill was excellent.
