THE KANAKA LABOR QUESTION
London, June 10. Sir Richard Temple advises the British to establish a protectorate over the South Sea Islands, whence the Kanaka labour is to be recruited by the Queensland Government. This Sir Richard says can only be done if France will agree to their islands being used for the recruiting of black labor. June 11. Sir J. G. Garrick, Agent-General for Queensland, in the course of an interview declared that inter-tribal feuds and iufautcide caused the depopulation of the Pacific Islands. Beislin, June 10. The Berliner Tageblatt asserts that the resumption of Kanaka traffic places the British in the light of slave hunters. Adelaide, June 11. The Coloured Labour Conference meets here in July. Perth (W.A.), June 12.
The Western Australian Government have withdrawn from the proposed conference on the introduction of coolie hibour into Australia, as they hold the same views as Sir Samuel Griffith, the Premier of Queensland, that no useful purpose is to be served by its being established.
